No furor over Adolf Hitler's name on Indian ballot

(AP) ? Adolf Hitler is running for election in India. So is Frankenstein.

The tiny northeast Indian state of Meghalaya has a special fascination for interesting and sometimes controversial names, and the ballot for state elections Saturday is proof.

Among the 345 contestants running for the state assembly are Frankenstein Momin, Billykid Sangma, Field Marshal Mawphniang and Romeo Rani. Some, like Kenedy Marak, Kennedy Cornelius Khyriem and Jhim Carter Sangma, are clearly hoping for the electoral success of their namesake American presidents.

Then there is Hitler.

This 54-year-old father of three has won three elections to the state assembly with little controversy over being named after the Nazi dictator.

His father had worked with the British army, but apparently developed enough of a fascination with Great Britain's archenemy to name his son Adolf Hitler ? though he also gave him the middle name Lu, Hitler said.

"I am aware at one point of time Adolf Hitler was the most hated person on earth for the genocide of the Jews. But my father added 'Lu' in between, naming me Adolf Lu Hitler, and that's why I am different," Hitler told The Associated Press from the small village of Mansingre, 200 kilometers west of Gauhati, the capital of the nearby state of Assam.

Hitler said his name has not stopped him from traveling the world, including to the United States and Germany.

"I never had problems obtaining a visa but I was asked many times during immigration as to why I should have such a name. I told the immigration staff I possibly didn't have a role in my naming," he said.

India played little role in World War II, and many Indians view Hitler not as the personification of evil but as a figure of fascination. Hitler's book "Mein Kampf" is prominently displayed at many Indian bookstores. The owner of a menswear shop named his store "Hitler," then expressed puzzlement last year after Israel complained.

Musfika Haq, a teacher in Meghalaya's capital, Shillong, said such names are common in the state.

"Parents obviously get fascinated by names of well-known or great leaders, but must be unaware that some of them, like Hitler, had been highly controversial," he said.

Influenza study: Meet virus' new enemy

Feb. 21, 2013 ? Simon Fraser University virologist Masahiro Niikura and his doctoral student Nicole Bance are among an international group of scientists that has discovered a new class of molecular compounds capable of killing the influenza virus.

Working on the premise that too much of a good thing can be a killer, the scientists have advanced previous researchers' methods of manipulating an enzyme that is key to how influenza replicates and spreads.

Their new compounds will lead to a new generation of anti-influenza drugs that the virus' strains can't adapt to, and resist, as easily as they do Tamiflu. It's an anti-influenza drug that is becoming less effective against the constantly mutating flu virus.

These increasingly less adequate anti-influenza drugs are currently doctors' best weapons against influenza. They helped the world beat H1N1, swine flu, into submission four years ago.

The journal Science Express has just published online the scientists' study, revealing how to use their newly discovered compounds to interrupt the enzyme neuraminidase's facilitation of influenza's spread.

Tamiflu and another anti-influenza drug, Relenza, focus on interrupting neuraminidase's ability to help influenza detach from an infected cell's surface by digesting sialic acid, a sugar on the surface of the cell. The flu virus uses the same sugar to stick to the cell while invading it. Once attached, influenza can invade the cell and replicate.

This is where the newly discovered compounds come to the still-healthy cells' rescue. They clog up neuraminidase, stopping the enzyme from dissolving the sialic acid, which prevents the virus from escaping the infected cell and spreading.

The new compounds are also more effective because they're water-soluble. "They reach the patient's throat where the flu virus is replicating after being taken orally," says Niikura, a Faculty of Health Sciences associate professor.

"Influenza develops resistance to Replenza less frequently, but it's not the drug of choice like Tamiflu because it's not water-soluble and has to be taken as a nasal spray.

"Our new compounds are structurally more similar to sialic acid than Tamiflu. We expect this closer match will make it much more difficult for influenza to adapt to new drugs."

Ultimately, the new compounds will buy scientists more time to develop new vaccines for emerging strains of influenza that are resistant to existing vaccines.

Launch of Free Android App: 10 Steps to Lucid Dreams

Auckland, New Zealand, February 20, 2013 --(PR.com)-- The hit website, World of Lucid Dreaming, has launched a free tutorial-based Android application, 10 Steps to Lucid Dreams.

Written by an expert in lucid dreaming, the app creates a structured lesson plan for "waking up" in your dreams, starting with improving your nightly dream recall.

"This is the first step to having lucid dreams," says Rebecca Turner, author of the app and creator of the popular website, World-of-Lucid-Dreaming.com.

"Dream recall is where you begin - after that, it can get kind of trippy, with reality checks, visualizations, techniques for walking your mind directly into the dream state, and even triggering out-of-body experiences and astral travel. These are all powerful but internally-generated extensions of the lucid dream experience."

The 10 tutorials are accessible to all ages and levels of experience, with one exception - Step #7: Dream Herbs. "On day 7, I bust some myths on the most popular dream-enhancing herbs. This step is totally optional - and if you're under 18, you should consult your parents first. Certain supplements can have powerful effects on your dreams and users take them at their own risk!"

So what's the most powerful step? "It's unrealistic to identify any single step as working in isolation," Rebecca explains, "but combine these tried-and-tested techniques, and I'm confident many people will have a lucid dream during the course."

Android users can download the app for free at the Google Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=worldofluciddreaming.apps.tenstepstoluciddreams

About Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreaming is the ability to become conscious (self-aware) within the dream state. It is a scientifically proven sleep state that has been recently popularized by sci-fi movies and new sleep mask and app technologies. Today there are millions of lucid dreamers in the world and millions more who seek to "wake up" in their dreams...

The result? An amazing virtual reality world, where everything looks and feels as vivid as waking life. And yet, the laws of physics do not apply: anything is possible. "This state of heightened awareness tells us a lot about human perception," Rebecca says, "and just how powerful the human brain really is."

About World of Lucid Dreaming

World-of-Lucid-Dreaming.com is a content-rich website dedicated to lucid dreaming and other altered states of awareness. Run by seasoned lucid dreamer, Rebecca Turner, the site generates 500,000 page views per month. It features multimedia content based on lucid dreaming techniques, expert interviews, sleep studies, paranormal investigations and first-hand accounts of dream phenomena.

Google Drive leads Android Apps of the Week

An update to Google Drive leads this week?s best apps on Android, mostly because Google constantly improves the productivity app, making it the handiest on the platform. Whether you need storage, word processing, or room for collaboration, Google Drive helps get work done, and its update includes some minor but extremely useful improvements. It joins a list of updates and inventive apps that will help make your Android devices more useful, and may even save you from getting caught in the rain.

Google Drive just might be one of the most useful apps on the Android platform. The app ties users into cloud-saved documents, giving them the ability to write, edit, and create on the web-based platform, and wrapping it all together with a super-handy cloud storage system. With all the capabilities Google Drive brings to smartphones and tablets, it?s the kind of app you absolutely need. This update adds pinch-to-zoom capabilities and streaming video support.

We?ve all heard about what a powerful news engine Twitter and other social networks can be, and many of us who frequent those sites use them to get a handle on what?s going on in the world. NewsWhip goes a step further and scans through the ?billions? of users on networks such as Facebook and Twitter, aggregates what those people are sharing in links and articles, and brings it to you as a news feed. It?s a great way to tap into what stories are popular, with the cool filter of being able to see what?s popular in different places around the world.

I love playing games on my mobile devices, but it?s refreshing to see apps pop up that actually have some greater artistic and cultural value. Tapestry is such an app. It?s a free delivery service for short fiction, with a clean user interface and a beautiful presentation. The app gets periodic updates with new stories from different authors, and you?ll be able to share pages with friends, interact with authors directly through social networks, and read in offline mode. So, your smartphone will be good for more than just blasting zombies and compulsively checking which friends liked your latest Facebook post.

As far as music streaming services go, Slacker Radio wants curated content to be more than just ?big giant list of songs.? Of course, there is a big giant list of songs that you can pull from and create your own playlists. But Slacker Radio adds talk radio, sports coverage, and playlists that combine those elements to allow, thereby offering alternatives to the most popular song hits of the day or obscure tracks from years ago. And its new update adds a total redesign of the app, bringing a new and tighter user interface.

If you?re looking for information on the weather, look no further than the Weather Channel app. We?re talking forecasts for the next few hours or the next few days, weather conditions from around the world, and fast-loading weather maps. The app?s latest update throws in improvements to the app?s performance, faster loading times, tablet optimization, and one extremely handy feature: forecast updates that give the exact time of weather changes. You?ll never get caught in the rain again, unless you want to.

PlayStation 4 Controller

After months of rumor and speculation, Sony has revealed its new game machine ? the PlayStation 4 ? as well as a new controller with a touch... Read more

Today's Sony event announcing the PlayStation 4 brought confirmation to rumors of a sophisticated new controller that integrates traditional and motion controls in the same device.

The Dual Shock 4 controller looks more or less like the leaked pictures seen in recent leaks. It's similar to the old dual-stick setup with directional pad and buttons, but it adds a couple new features: A touchpad like the PlayStation Vita's on the front, and a light bar that acts both as a player indicator and a PlayStation Move-like motion controller.

There's a stereo camera that tracks the controller, but apparently not the players themselves. Also added was a "share" button that allows instantaneous review of the last few minutes of gameplay, from which the player can select a portion to upload. A live demonstration of how easy this is drew applause from the audience at the event.

Sony claims to have improved both latency and the rumble function, so you'll have more responsive controls and more forceful feedback. A headphone jack completes the package, making headphone gaming easier.

One last bonus: If someone else is using the TV, you can stream games to the PlayStation Vita and use that as a controller instead.

Movie about Bruce Lee?s most legendary fight is in the works

Bruce Lee obtained legendary status as a martial artist in part because of a 1965 fight in Oakland, Calif., against Chinese kung fu master Wong Jack Man. It was the last fight of Lee's career.

For nearly 50 years, there has been much speculation and heated debate about what occurred inside of that gym, as very few people witnessed it. But the upshot of the bout is that it helped to develop Lee's views on Jeet Kune Do, which is the forerunner of today's mixed martial arts.

On Tuesday, Deadline.com reported that a movie about the fight that will be called "Birth of the Dragon" will be produced by QED International and Groundwell Productions.

[Also: Courageous Liz Carmouche open about sexual orientation]

Groundswell CEO Michael London told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday that the process of developing a screen play has just begun.

It is not, however, designed to be a biography of Lee, who died in 1973, or the definitive account of the fight.

"We're actually not trying to re-tell the story of Bruce Lee," London said. "I think that's a natural impression people might get. The idea, actually, is to take that battle, which has been so mysterious and so powerful and so interesting to so many, and tell the lead-up to that story, which is Wong Jack Man's arrival in San Francisco.

"We've created a back story. There is a lot people that know about why Wong Jack Man came to San Francisco, but we're trying to create a dramatically satisfying story about why he's there. So we're taking license. That's why we say it's going to be inspired by that fight and isn't a literal telling of it."

London said the writers -- Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen Rivele -- have the belief that Jack Man was trying to help Lee to become the best version of himself and was trying to teach Lee lessons.

London said the fight sequences will be shown through the eyes of the people who were there. One of those was Lee's wife, Linda, who was eight months pregnant at the time with the couple's son, Brandon.

"There will be a slightly stylized quality to the actual fight sequences," London said. "That will allow different people who were there to come away with differing conclusions of what happened. ... The whole idea is that the 13 people who saw that fight came away with very differing ideas of what happened. The fight itself will be impressionistic."

[Also: UFC's Matt Riddle wants to push for change on pot ban]

Jack Man is reclusive and rarely does interviews and has rarely spoken of that fight. London said producers will approach him after finishing the screenplay. He said he hasn't reached out to Lee's family, either.

Lee's daughter, Shannon, who runs the Bruce Lee Foundation, said that the fight was significant in her father's life because of the impact it had upon him.

Review show resistant starch kills pre-cancerous cells and reduces inflammation

As the name suggests, you can't digest resistant starch so it ends up in the bowel in pretty much the same form it entered your mouth. As unlovely as that seems, once in the bowel this resistant starch does some important things, including decreasing bowel pH and transit time, and increasing the production of short-chain fatty acids. These effects promote the growth of good bugs while keeping bad bugs at bay. A University of Colorado Cancer Center review published in this month's issue of the journal Current Opinion in Gastroenterology shows that resistant starch also helps the body resist colorectal cancer through mechanisms including killing pre-cancerous cells and reducing inflammation that can otherwise promote cancer.

"Resistant starch is found in peas, beans and other legumes, green bananas, and also in cooked and cooled starchy products like sushi rice and pasta salad. You have to consume it at room temperate or below as soon as you heat it, the resistant starch is gone. But consumed correctly, it appears to kill pre-cancerous cells in the bowel," says Janine Higgins, PhD, CU Cancer Center investigator and associate professor of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Higgins describes studies showing that rats fed resistant starch show decreased numbers and sizes of lesions due to colorectal cancer, and an increased number of cells that express the protein IL-10, which acts to regulate the body's inflammatory response.

"Resistant starch may also have implications for the prevention of breast cancer," Higgins says. "For example, if you let rats get obese, get them to lose the weight, and then feed half of the rats a diet high in resistant starch these rats don't gain back the weight as fast as rats fed a regular, digestible starch diet. This effect on obesity may help to reduce breast cancer risk as well as having implications for the treatment of colorectal cancer."

"There are a lot of things that feed into the same model of resistant starch as a cancer-protective agent," Higgins says. "Much of this information currently comes from rodent models and small clinical trials but the evidence is encouraging." On the table now is a menu of benefits and while it's just now being studied which benefits, exactly, will pan out as mechanisms of cancer prevention, one thing is clear: resistant starch should be on the menu.

US Commercial Real Estate Market Slowly Recovers

The National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries Board (NCREIF) reports that the US commercial real estate (CRE) market is on a slow mend, according to indices for investments in 2012. Sales surged last year to nearly $64 billion, and experts at Co-Star Group report that such a high volume has not been seen in the CRE market since 2004. Indices show that the multifamily and office sectors in central business districts were the hottest markets last year and NCREIF analysts say the recovery has even spread to the retail sector. For more on this continue reading the following article from National Real Estate Investor.?

The indices have been released for 2012, and they show continued steady strength for commercial property investments.

?Real estate investment returns have a reputation for stability, and 2012 has reinforced that,? says Ron Kaiser, chairman of the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries (NCREIF) Board. ?Not only have quarterly total returns again come in at the 2.5 percent level, but all property types and nearly all geographic regions report similar numbers.?

The volume of sales surged in 2012, which helped to support these strong returns. Sales volume reached nearly $64 billion in 2012, the highest annual total since 2004, according to the Co-Star Group Inc. Since the crash, the volume of commercial real estate sale has risen steadily, and activity spiked upwards in December as investors rushed to close deals before the end of the year and improving market fundamentals and attractive yields drew investors to commercial real estate.

The recovery is also broadening to the lower end of the pricing market. CoStar?s equal-weighted composite index sped up its growth in the second half of 2012 and registered 8.1 percent for the year. Meanwhile, CoStar?s value-weighted composite index, which concentrates on more valuable properties, registered just 4.3 percent growth. That?s still fast than inflation, but less than its double-digit growth throughout 2011.

According to the CoStar indices, ?Investors are moving beyond core properties and driving up pricing at the lower end of the market.?

The numbers from Moody?s/RCA Commercial Property Price Indices, which also sample a broad range of markets and properties, also showed an increase of 8.1 percent for U.S. commercial real estate prices in 2012.

The NCREIF Property Index, which favors institutional-quality properties, also marked stable, solid investment returns. That includes appreciation to the value of properties 4.51 percent in 2012, roughly matching CoStar?s ?value weighted? numbers for the year. NCREIF?s property index also includes 5.84 percent returns from income from properties, adding to a total return of 10.54 percent.

Among the various property types, some old favorites still did very well in 2012. The Moody?s/RCA CPPI showed that office and apartment properties in central business districts were the hottest sectors, with price increases of 19.1 percent and 11.2 percent, respectively, for the year. Suburban office was the only sector to see a price decline in 2012, edging down by 0.8 percent.

"The CBD office sector has been a leader in the post-crisis recovery, and both its major and non-major market components posted double-digit returns in 2012," says Moody?s Director of Commercial Real Estate Research Tad Philipp. "The performance of apartments in major markets was just warm during 2012 but the results from non-majors was enough to make it a hot sector overall."

The real estate recovery also spread to retail properties, according to NCREIF. Its index of institutional properties shows that retail properties were the best performing in the fourth quarter with a 2.97 percent total return, and for the whole year with an 11.61 percent return. That?s just ahead of the apartment sector?s 11.23 percent return. The hotel sector was the worst performer for the year with an 8.23 percent return, which really isn?t that bad.

Biden to Connecticut for Gun Talk

Vice President Joe Biden is slated to travel to Connecticut this week to deliver remarks at a conference on gun violence about 12 miles from Newtown, Conn.

Chris Murphy, Connecticut's newly elected Democratic senator, told reporters on a conference call today that Biden's visit will help Newtown heal after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that sparked a national debate over gun control.

"We have not had a comprehensive forum to explain to the Newtown community and to the people in Connecticut the changes we're thinking about making in Washington," Murphy said, noting that most of the discussion about guns in Connecticut has centered on changes to state law.

"The conference is going to be really important, both in terms of its role in the community's recovery process, as well as in the community's role in the educational process in this issue," Murphy told reporters on a conference call organized to release polling figures critical of the National Rifle Association.

Attendees have not been announced, and Murphy said the full list is being finalized. Murphy will host the event along with Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Elizabeth Etsy, both Democrats from Connecticut.

Influential Few Predict Behavior of the Many

To completely understand how a living organism works one would have to take it apart, the great physicist Niels Bohr once observed?but then the organism would certainly be dead. In general, systems of high complexity, including living things but ranging from the Internet to social networks, are often impossible to track in all their details.

But what if you didn't have to? Network-theory researchers now have come up with some clever mathematics that reveals complex systems by tracking a selected few of their components.

Say, for example, that you wanted to find a biological marker that identifies people with a certain disease. You can track down all the genes that are expressed differently in people with the disease and assemble a network that shows their interactions, but how do you then pick out those that are specific to the illness?

The new work may help researchers to identify the key nodes in a network that determine the state of every other node, greatly simplifying the search.

?This paper shows how you can reduce a network to the really important component parts that drive the system?s behavior,? says Joseph Loscalzo of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. ?It begins to make the system more tractable,? adds Loscalzo, who would like to apply the technique to medicine.

To demonstrate their technique, Yang-Yu Liu of Northeastern University in Boston and his colleagues looked at the entire human metabolic network and found that concentrations of about 10 percent of the body's 2,763 metabolites could be used to determine the levels of all the rest.

But the method could also be used in social networks to identify the people whose opinions determine everyone else?s, helping to predict the outcome of, say, a presidential election. Or it could help ecologists to single out the particular species to track to follow changes in an entire ecosystem, to name just a few potential applications.

Needle-like nodes

To imagine how this works, start with a simple network in which a chemical A becomes chemical B. Because any changes in B are exclusively determined by A, monitoring B over time will also enable you to determine the state of A. The same would not be true if you monitored only A: Without knowing the initial level of B, changes in A aren?t enough to determine the level of B. The team pictured the situation above as a pair of nodes, A and B, with an arrow going from B to A to represent how information about B leads to information about A but not vice versa.

More complex reaction systems don?t yield such obvious results. Liu's team tackled the problem by examining clusters of strongly connected components in a network, again represented by nodes with arrows connecting them. For clusters that have no incoming arrows, as is the case of B above, the researchers freely picked a single node from each cluster.

They found that most of the time (and almost always in real-world networks), these selected nodes alone are sufficient to determine the state of every other node in the network. The team published its results in the?Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Although theoretically possible, it is extremely difficult to reconstruct the entire network from these nodes. In many applications, however, that will not be necessary, because the needle-like nodes in the haystack of links should reveal the network's most important properties.

Britain's PM Cameron says wants RBS to speed restructuring

MUMBAI (Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron says he wants state-controlled Royal Bank of Scotland to speed up restructuring and has refused to rule out giving the government's share in the bank to the public.

The government owns 82 percent of RBS after pumping in 45 billion pounds ($70 billion) of capital when the bank neared collapse in 2008.

Speaking in India during a trip aimed at drumming up trade and investment, Cameron made it clear he was keen to return the bank to private ownership as soon as possible and wanted it to step up its efforts to overhaul itself.

"It was a very badly damaged institution but I think they are doing the right thing but obviously we want them to, where possible, accelerate the adjustments that they are making in terms of making it a strong organization," he said.

When asked to comment on reports the government was considering giving away its stake by 2015, Cameron said:

"These are all interesting questions for the future. The first job is to turn around the performance of RBS and to strengthen its balance sheet, strengthen its business and that's what (RBS Chief Executive) Stephen Hester and his team are doing.

"But I am keen to examine all possibilities for what we can do to put RBS in time back into the private sector."

In October, RBS said it was preparing to sell the shares in 2014, one year before the next general election, with the timing and sale structure up to the government. No share giveaway was mentioned.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg in 2011 backed proposals to give the public shares in part-nationalized banks because taxpayer money had been used to keep the banking system alive.

At the time, the Treasury said it would "look at all options", but critics dismissed the idea as a headline-grabbing exercise.

4 Reasons Your Marriage Is Susceptible To Divorce | World of ...

4 Reasons Your Marriage May Be Susceptible to Divorce This guest article from YourTango was written by Dr. Tina Schermer-Sellers.

The fire of love is a fragile and fickle flame. I often hear stories of people leaving good relationships because they have developed deep connections outside the marriage. So, how can you keep your marriage intact?

There are four, cultural elements causing marriage and love to be more fragile in these modern times. They are:

1. We marry for love.

We have been doing this for less than 100 years. Up until recent history, we married because of family loyalties, property, status, religious mandates and social tradition.

Love is a fragile thing ? it needs lots of TLC! If love is ignored, the bond in the relationship will weaken. Inside this weakness dissention, criticism and distance grows. Love is like a small flame; it needs lots of consistent time and attention to stay strong!

2. Spouses aren?t dependent on one another.

Women and men are now both able to care for themselves and their children financially and socially, leaving both sexes less likely to stay in unhappy relationships. This fact, plus the fact that many people have successfully moved on from one marriage into another life reduces the stigma of divorce.

The financial and social pressure to stay married isn?t what it used to be. People stay married because they choose each other daily, they want to choose each other daily, and they nourish their connection daily as well.

3. We live longer than we ever have.

The average age of marriage in urban areas is 26 for women and 28 for men. With a lifespan of 85-plus years, it is feasible to be married for 60-plus years. There is a great amount of change people go through over a 60-year relationship.

As a culture, do we invest any time giving people the skills they need to keep a love alive and vibrant? Do we even know what that means, what that looks like, or how to do such a thing? A couple who actively works to improve their relationship IQ weathers life?s challenges with more grace, compassion and love. As they keep growing, so does their relationship.

4. We now live a 24/7 lifestyle.

This is an entirely new social phenomenon that has never been the case before. People are working 50+ hours a week, on their communication devices all hours of the night and day, expected to be reachable and attending to multiple demands simultaneously ? the email from work, the text from a child, the conversation with a partner, the deadline that is tomorrow, the sale that ends tonight. This is impossible ? hello?? ? this is impossible to do without losing connection with those closest to you.

To nourish a meaningful, deeply attached relationship with a child, spouse or friend, to nourish love, you need focused time to be thoughtfully and solely with each other ? in the moment ? present in the now ? open heart to open heart. That is the only way. Distracted connections become weak connections and weak connections, with nothing social or internal holding them together, will in time, break. There is no magic wishing that will suffice ? they will break.

If these influences negatively affect your love life, discuss how you can bring more TLC into your relationship. Discuss how to wrap space, time and attention around you by putting in a few protective boundaries. For example, no electronics in bed or 15 minutes of quiet music, a glass of wine and a dimly lit room together before bed.

Most importantly, discuss what you miss and how to bring more of that into your busy lives, longing hearts and sacred union.

MIT and US Army crafting uniforms with full-body fiberoptic sensors

MIT and US Army crafting uniforms with stealthy fiberoptic communication, sensors

Militaries want soldiers to carry an increasing amount of tech on to the battlefield, but that isn't necessarily convenient -- or comfortable. MIT and the US Army have started early work on uniforms with fiberoptic sensors that would alleviate much of that burden. By weaving in microfibers cut from a mix of specialized, fluidized materials, the partnership can build data links that cover the entire body without breaking or adding significant bulk. They could serve as basic elements of a communication system, but MIT has broader ambitions: the sensors could track wounds through heat signatures, and just might prevent friendly fire incidents by sending a don't-shoot signal when targeted with a laser sight. The fibers still have to get much thinner before the Army can offer smart uniforms as standard issue, but the wearable tech may keep soldiers nimble and, just possibly, save a few lives.

Enlightened, Season 2

Every week, Jeffrey Bloomer will have an IM conversation with a different fan of Enlightened. This week, he rehashes episode 2.6 with Miriam Krule, a Slate copy editor.

Jeff: So do you have a new boyfriend or what, Miriam?

Miriam: I really can?t talk about this with you, Jeff. Seriously though, I hope Amy doesn?t, because I'm a Levi fan and was so glad to see him come back from rehab. This episode had such a different tone than the rest of the season?even series?and I was trying to put my finger on why. Then I realized it was because, for the first time, everything seems to be going well for Amy. But, like, genuinely great?everything she wants, everything she wanted, is happening. It's not just in her head anymore.

Jeff: I was so happy Helen cut through the shit and just asked Amy what was going on with her. But you're absolutely right: Amy is closing in on nirvana. Levi returns, wants Amy back, and even offers to try to heal her biggest scar, her miscarriage. She finally sleeps with Jeff, because that needed to happen. And she is about to slay her corporate monsters.

At the same time, we've never seen her more vulnerable. Naturally, now that her fantasies are beginning to become real, she has no idea what to do. The panic attack she has in front of Helen continued the show's recent tradition of making me ball my eyes out.

Miriam: I have to confess that I'm not a big Enlightened crier, but that moment in her room with her mother was probably the closest I?ve come to tears. People talk about the discomfort they get from watching the show, but this felt like the one true, authentic release of emotions we?ve seen from Amy. ?

That said, the high-five Dougie gave Amy was a bit much for me, though?like some kind of calm before the storm? I think Jeff and his article are going to be the source of her necessary downfall. It would be fitting for the thing that might save Amy to be the thing that drags her down deeper.

Jeff: Why is her downfall necessary? I think one of the secret keys to Enlightened is realizing Amy is kind of right about everything, she just works overtime to make it seem like she's a kook.

And not that this is exactly a love triangle, but do you think Levi is really Amy?s salvation? Do you think he's "fixed," as he says? Or do you think Jeff's quasi-revolutionary posturing is too seductive?

Miriam: The oversimplified version, in my mind, is that Levi is who she wants to be with, whereas Jeff is the person she wants to want to be with. But then Levi comes back seeming pretty excellent. She doesn't know about what went down in rehab until now because he never sent that letter. When he told Amy ?life is beautiful" and then threw that baseball with perfect form, I swooned.?

Back to your question about the downfall being necessary: For me, that's part of the point. The struggle is what Amy wants, what she needs. The hardships are her motivation, and when she seems to be getting everything, she's so overwhelmed?and not by happiness.

Jeff: Yes, Levi, swoon. You?re right about Amy being so consumed and motivated by the struggle that she doesn't know what to do without one. But I hope the diagnosis isn't chronic. Maybe we're just seeing growing pains while learns how to be happy again. It could happen!

I also have my own theory why Jeff might not work out: I think he's Amy dressed up in big-city-intellectual clothes. The "tyranny is over!? line is kind of a giveaway. He certainly talks the talk better than Amy ever could, but I'm not sure that his rallying cry against the faceless corporate menace is any more sophisticated than Amy's.

Miriam: Well, he?s successful Amy, which is a huge difference. He's who Amy thinks she wants to be. But isn?t he exactly who every liberal-minded college sophomore wants to be? And is that so bad?

Jeff: I suppose not. I shouldn't roll my eyes so quickly. Perhaps it's another case of Amy (or in this case, Jeff) being in the right, just in the most annoying, self-serving way possible. I mean, "It's like the Wikileaks of Abaddon! You're Julian Assange!" Shut up, Jeff.

Miriam: Exactly. The only real voice of reason is Tyler, whose vindictive side is perhaps more entertaining, though less endearing, than his I-love-Molly Shannon side.

Jeff: Yes, I agree. I'm sad his unhinged inner demon hasn?t manifested on anyone else. Molly Shannon melts another heart. That said, can he please stop second-guessing this thing already, FFS? Yeah, he kind of used Eileen in the beginning, but he needs to just deal with it. Let's hope the show never sees reason to have Eileen figure out the origins of their relationship. I see no point in going down that path.

Miriam: Wait, are you saying you don't want to unhinged Eileen join forces with unhinged Tyler? The second I saw Molly Shannon I got excited for an epic breakdown to rival Amy's.

Jeff: Do I want to see that? For sure. But she's so well adjusted! She is like the anti-Amy in a way, pure of soul and intention but not a self-absorbed jerk.

Miriam: It's true. As much as I love Wet Hot American Summer, it's nice to see she's moved on. Which seems to be the general gist of this episode: a more adult and responsible group of people. Levi, Dougie, Amy, even Tyler in a way.

Jeff: Ha, well, Dougie did belt out "Kiss my black ass!" at one point. Some things don't change, nor should they. I think it's time to go wipe my misty eyes and go prepare for the coming storm.??

Miriam: OK, I?m just gonna hang here and catch the sunset.

Slithering towards extinction: Reptiles in trouble

Feb. 14, 2013 ? Nineteen percent of the world's reptiles are estimated to be threatened with extinction, states a paper published February 14 by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in conjunction with experts from the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC).

The study, printed in the journal of Biological Conservation, is the first of its kind summarising the global conservation status of reptiles. More than 200 world renowned experts assessed the extinction risk of 1,500 randomly selected reptiles from across the globe.

Out of the estimated 19% of reptiles threatened with extinction, 12% classified as Critically Endangered, 41% Endangered and 47% Vulnerable.

Three Critically Endangered species were also highlighted as possibly extinct. One of these, a jungle runner lizard Ameiva vittata, has only ever been recorded in one part of Bolivia. Levels of threat remain particularly high in tropical regions, mainly as a result of habitat conversion for agriculture and logging. With the lizard's habitat virtually destroyed, two recent searches for the species have been unsuccessful.

Dr. Monika B?hm, lead author on the paper: "Reptiles are often associated with extreme habitats and tough environmental conditions, so it is easy to assume that they will be fine in our changing world.

"However, many species are very highly specialised in terms of habitat use and the climatic conditions they require for day to day functioning. This makes them particularly sensitive to environmental changes," Dr. B?hm added.

Extinction risk is not evenly spread throughout this highly diverse group: freshwater turtles are at particularly high risk, mirroring greater levels of threat in freshwater biodiversity around the world. Overall, this study estimated 30% of freshwater reptiles to be close to extinction, which rises to 50% when considering freshwater turtles alone, as they are also affected by national and international trade.

Although threat remains lower in terrestrial reptiles, the often restricted ranges, specific biological and environmental requirements, and low mobility make them particularly susceptible to human pressures. In Haiti, six of the nine species of Anolis lizard included in this study have an elevated risk of extinction, due to extensive deforestation affecting the country.

Collectively referred to as 'reptiles', snakes, lizards, amphisbaenians (also known as worm lizards), crocodiles, and tuataras have had a long and complex evolutionary history, having first appeared on the planet around 300 million years ago. They play a number of vital roles in the proper functioning of the world's ecosystems, as predator as well as prey.

Head of ZSL's Indicators and Assessment Unit, Dr Ben Collen says: "Gaps in knowledge and shortcomings in effective conservation actions need to be addressed to ensure that reptiles continue to thrive around the world. These findings provide a shortcut to allow important conservation decisions to be made as soon as possible and firmly place reptiles on the conservation map,"

"This is a very important step towards assessing the conservation status of reptiles globally," says Philip Bowles, Coordinator of the Snake and Lizard Red List Authority of the IUCN Species Survival Commission. "The findings sound alarm bells about the state of these species and the growing threats that they face globally. Tackling the identified threats, which include habitat loss and harvesting, are key conservation priorities in order to reverse the declines in these reptiles."

The current study provides an indicator to assess conservation success, tracking trends in extinction risk over time and humanity's performance with regard to global biodiversity targets.

ZSL and IUCN will continue to work with collaborating organisations to ensure reptiles are considered in conservation planning alongside more charismatic mammal species.

Johannesburg:? Highveld Lions opener Quinton de Kock hit 126 runs on Sunday in a South African Twenty20 Challenge match - the highest score made in the country in the shortest form of the game.

His unbeaten 80-minute knock off 69 balls included 13 fours and six sixes and surpassed the 117 of Chris Gayle for the West Indies against South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg six years ago.

Johannesburg-born De Kock is a 20-year-old left-hand batsman-cum-wicketkeeper who made his T20 international debut at home to New Zealand two months ago and contributed an undefeated 28 toward an eight-wicket victory.

He has been bought for $20,000 (14,950 euros) by Indian Premier League outfit Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2013 season, reportedly as a replacement wicketkeeper for Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara and Parthiv Patel.

Recently crowned provincial four-day champions Cape Cobras were the team at the receiving end of De Kock at Senwes Park in north-western university town Potchefstroom as the Lions surged to a nine-wicket opening-round triumph.

Charl Langeveldt (0-39), Rory Kleinveldt (0-34), Johann Louw (0-29) and Justin Ontong (0-27) suffered most as the Cobras bowlers proved no match for De Kock and fellow opener Gulam Bodi (40).

Wicketkeeper Dane Vilas (63 not out), Qassim Adams (43) and Richard Levi (40) were the chief contributors as the Cobras reached 183-5 in 20 overs and the Lions responded with 185-1 off 18.5 overs.

Warriors defeated Knights by eight wickets on the Duckworth/Lewis method in another game after the competition opener between Dolphins and title-holders Titans in Durban Friday was washed out.

In another measure to deal with the situation, the Electricity General Authority of Thailand will consider buying electricity from independent power producers at a unit price lower than cost and at a rate that is cheaper than bunker oil, to minimise the need to import the expensive fuel, said Pallapa Ruangrong. Factories might be asked to operate during night hours, when electricity consumption by households usually reduces, and department stores will be encouraged to turn up the thermostat on their air conditioners. Any companies cooperating with this scheme will be incentivised with a per-unit Bt2 reduction in the electricity fee, compared with a per-unit production cost of Bt6 for production relying on bunker oil, or Bt8 for diesel.

These measures will be proposed to the Energy Ministry for initial consideration, Pallapa said, adding that they could keep Thailand from consuming too much power in April. To cope with a halt in delivery of gas from Myanmar to Thailand in April, stockpiling of a large daily amount of fuel and gas for local consumption is underway, while production of electricity relying on the depleted supplies will be switched temporarily to alternative fuels, Kurujit Nakornthap, a deputy permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry, said yesterday.

The plans are similar to a halt last year, from April 8-17, but it is not yet known how many days this year's halt in operations will last, he said, adding that the annual halt, resulting from regular maintenance work, is allowed for no more than 15 days per year under deals each contractor has with PTT, which is granted concessions by the Myanmar authorities. During the 10-day break last year, LNG needed for electricity production was cut. lost at around 1.1 cubic foot each day, andThree major power plants - two in Ratchaburi and one belonging to TriEnergy Co Ltd - that rely on LNG stopped operating, while three other plants switched to alternative production methods relying on bunker oil, he added.
