Non-profits and Social Media: Fundraising Campaigns Where ...

Twive and ReceiveFundraising is one of the necessary evils of the non-profit world.

In order to keep a non-profit afloat, and do the good works that you originally set out to do, you have to be funded. That requires some mix of seeking grants from the government and businesses, as well as approaching individuals to ?invest? in the work you are doing. And quite often, in this economy, it might seem as though you spend more time trying to raise funds, than you do on your actual social mission.

In his wonderful new book, The Non-Profit Narrative (which I?ll be reviewing very soon), Dan Portnoy notes:

Non-profit organizations weren?t started to consistently ask for money and talk about the troubles of keeping the lights on. Remember, they were started to change the world.

And yet, if you work at a non-profit organization, you may feel like you always have your hand out. And that might actually be the perception that many have of your organization. But what if you just took the time to maximize your fundraising efforts, so that you could generate more money with each ask, and therefore, not have to ask so often? Wouldn?t that be a wonderful thing? It?s no fun asking for money.

Unless you?re creative. And have the right tools at your disposal.

Enter Razoo Giving, an online social giving platform. My friend Ifdy Perez, a champion of social good, and the Community Manager at Razoo, which I believe is the most robust social giving platform[, sent me a DM on Twitter yesterday telling me about their new project: Twive and Receive. When I checked it out, I knew I not only had to write this post about it, but I also signed up. But more on that later?

Twive and Receive is a 24-hour online giving competition scheduled for June 14th. Folks like you and me will represent our communities on Twitter and other social platforms to raise money for our favorite local non-profit, while at the same time competing to help them win a share of $30,000.

Razoo has hosted one-day events like this before, but usually on a more hyper-local or regional level. For instance, ?Give to the Max Day? back in November in Washington, D.C. raised more than $2-million in just one day for over a thousand local non-profits. Pretty impressive, eh?

Here?s what I like about this particular campaign:

1) It?s social ? At the heart of this campaign is Twitter, but other platforms like Facebook, Pinterest, and even blogging will be used to raise awareness during this 24-hour period. While one or two people in each community will be heading up the effort, they?ll be using their online social influence to get others on board.

2) It fosters community ? The large majority of the campaign will be done online, but there can be offline elements as well. And you and other locals can band together online, and even gather together offline, to rally the troops and raise awareness and funds for your cause. Nothing brings people together better than a shared cause that benefits your local community.

3) It?s short ? Many high profile fundraisers seem to go on forever. And ever. This is limited to 24-hours. In. Out. It?s Over.

4) It?s competitive ? Gamification is one of the buzzwords of the social realm these days. Foursquare and other platforms use gamification to get people involved and keep them involved. Who doesn?t love a little friendly competition? It?s you and your city against a host of other cities, seeing who can raise the most money. Community pride can be a powerful motivating factor.

5) It?s fun ? Or, it CAN be fun. It?s all how you execute. But when?s the last time you enjoyed fundraising? Usually we dread the task of asking others for money. Here, you can have some fun and raise money at the same time.

6) It fosters and rewards creativity ? I have no idea how this campaign will shake out, but I?m convinced of one thing: the cities that win will be the ones that exhibit the most creativity. If all you do is tweet about raising money, you can only go so far. But what if you get local businesses and media involved? Are there offline methods you can use to get people involved online? What about a tweetup for happy hour? There are so many things

7) It fosters relationships between the community and the non-profit ? If you do this right, your non-profit will be on board, and they?ll be promoting it as well. You?ll have the chance to connect local folks to the non-profit, who might never have engaged with them in the past. And it feels good to give something back to your community as an individual. At the same time, the non-profit benefits by rolling up their sleeves and working alongside community members.

8) Razoo will help you along the way ? This isn?t some promotion or contest where you?re told to do something, and then the organizing business disappears until the last day. Razoo will be putting together an online toolkit to help you plan your day, including widgets you can put on websites and Facebook pages. They?ll also be hosting weekly conference calls to bring you up to date on the campaign, and offer you tips.

9) Everyone wins ? You win by being a part of something good in your community, and you?ll get to meet and build relationships with others. Your non-profit wins, because even if they don?t ?win? the competition, they still get to keep the money that was raised for them. Plus they?ll most likely have access to new donors. And Razoo wins because they are the organizers of this, and many non-profits will be introduced to their great platform.

I?ve already signed up to be the point person for my community in Lancaster, and I?ve chosen the non-profit for which we?ll be fundraising: Water Street Ministries (client) which provides a variety of services to the homeless and needy in our area. They serve a lot of people and do great work.

What about you? Are you willing to step up and be the point person for your community? If there is no one representing your city, why not consider signing up now? And if your city is already spoken for, join the cause! Contact the person listed next to your city and offer to lend a hand, or a tweet.

What do you think are the hallmarks or elements of a successful online fundraising campaign? What has worked for you in the past? How can you incorporate these elements into your fundraising efforts all year long?

Lindsay Lohan legal nightmares may be near end ? This Just In ...

Lindsay Lohan's probation hearing Thursday could be the last time in court for the actress, ending nearly five years of legal troubles that began with a drunken driving arrest.

Lohan's probation officer sent another good progress report to the judge, confirming that the actress has completed the 480 hours of community service and the four-times-a-month psychological counseling sessions ordered, a source familiar with the case said.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner told Lohan in November that her formal probation would end March 29 if she met the probation requirements.

She would remain on informal probation for two more years on a misdemeanor shoplifting conviction, but her felony probation from two drunken driving convictions is set to end Thursday.

On My Family Tree ? ashleysthought

When I started writing this blog initially, I used to write a lot more about my family. I got some of the best feedback from stories about my?mother and my childhood. After a bit, a few people who read this, that I actually know in real life started emphasizing how my family would feel if they were to read?it. Then I felt bad. I felt like I shouldn?t be having a very public, world-wide laugh at their expense. Most days I still feel like that, but not today. The fact of the matter is that this shit is true. I couldn?t make this up if I tried.

I had received some emails?with questions about what the rest of my family was like and what kind of childhood?I had. This is my family tree.

My Mother

Some?of you have read my earlier posts where I mentioned my mother. People have told me that she would be great for a sitcom or a movie character.?It?s a nice thought, but she actually exists in real life. TV could never capture her. When I was younger, my mother was a very unhappy woman. Truthfully, she?was dealt a really shitty deck of cards. No one?could have played them well. I remember driving with my mother, in a car that had been?sold to her for $500 on the?front yard?of a trailer park, and complaining?about her?smoking with the windows rolled up. It would make me sick and I could tell when I went to school that my clothes reeked. I remember so clearly how she turned, looked at me and said, ?cigarettes are the only joy I have in my life.? I was in second grade, but I knew that meant her life really sucked. I figured if that was the only joy she had I shouldn?t mind the 3 packs she smoked every day. I don?t have a single childhood image of her without?a cigarette in? her mouth. This woman washed her hair with one hand and smoked a cigarette with the other. There are still burn marks on the side of her bathtub. If you?re familiar with my early posts, you also know that she has a tramp stamp and a few other bad tattoos. They are in very poor taste, but they truly reflect her life story. She was a single mother, raising 3 kids that she never hesitated to tell a person were all ?mistakes.? She wasn?t home much because she was out working shitty jobs and making no money. There were lots of boyfriends,?even?a?couple engagements, some stints with drugs and?various?mental health disorders. I was well into my twenties before I realized that she wasn?t as much of a complete bitch, as she was a trooper. I moved out of her house when I was 14 and didn?t really have a relationship with her until the past year or so, after I broke up with my ex. I figured if anyone knew about failed relationships, it was her. I had been out of touch with her for so long, that she had become a completely new and different mom. Mom4GS. She got married to a nice guy, renovated her house and found herself in a career. She really got her shit straightened out and I?m happy for her. Sometimes it?s still weird. I?m thankful I got the chance to meet her again.

My Father

My father is arguably the most hardworking man alive. In fact, he is so hardworking that one day, when I was 8 years old, he went to work and never came back again. He must be putting in a lot of overtime. When he didn?t come home the first few days, I knew that he was gone for good. People always ask if I worried that he had been hurt or kidnapped or something, but usually when that happens people don?t clear out their drawers and pack their bags. It made things really difficult on my mom. His disappearance catapulted the?series of misfortune that was to come in the years ahead. bankruptcy, abusive boyfriends and things of that nature. I had to go to a very exclusive group at my school called, ?Banana Splits.? It was run by the guidance counselor. Any time there were family days or activities, we would get pulled out of the room to talk about our ?feelings.? It was supposed to be discreet, but it didn?t come close. On the last day of school, the counselor let us eat banana splits to replace the dad deficit. That is the best logic I could ever get from it. There were lots of times growing up and even sometimes now, when I could have really used a dad. I still have not seen or heard from him since he went to work that day. It?s been 17 years.

My Older Brother

Ugh, god. What do I say about this kid? Dumb as a rock?no. ?He is my brother and I love him. However, it?s not easy. He is living with an imaginary disease?that causes him to be 17 years old for the rest of his life. While eating with him at a restaurant one time, he had this to say about his diet, ?I only eat once a day because I only?like really unhealthy food. I would never eat a fruit or vegetable. I usually just eat cheese steaks and shit. If I only eat once a day, it?s healthier and I won?t get as fat.? No, he wasn?t kidding. That is probably the most well thought out conversation he?s had in years. He is perfectly happy, approaching 30 and serving soup and salad combos at Olive Garden. I?m still learning to get off his case. If he?s happy, that?s good enough.

My Younger Brother

My younger brother is the nicest, most kind-hearted person who ever called in a bomb scare and got expelled from school. I mean that. He?s an amazing artist and an amazing stoner. He is covered head to toe in tattoos and piercings. People often get this hard ass impression of him, but that couldn?t be farther from the truth. He is really sensitive and loving. When we were in high school,?(pre-expulsion) he cried when our hermit crab died. It?s still buried somewhere in our mother?s backyard. He is still lazy and mooching, but he?s becoming more of a productive member of society. Thank God.

My Maternal Grandparents

My grandfather lived with us much of our lives, though we didn?t see or speak to him that often. I know. This is still a piece that boggles my mind as well. He was a man?s man.?Worked in construction, hung out at?the?Elks and drank a ton of booze. The booze is probably the reason we needed a babysitter even if he was home. I remember staying up late at night when my friends would sleep over and we would have to be quiet so we didn?t bother him. We would wait to see him stumble out of his room inebriated, in his underwear, and scratch his back against the wall, like a bear.?A very drunk bear.?He chewed Red Man tobacco and signed?his?Christmas cards?using his first and last name, never grandpa.?His gallbladder burst and poisoned his whole body about two years ago.?50+?years of hardcore booze ended up killing him. When I think of him,?I feel like I never got the chance to know him as well as I should have, but I still smile and?laugh.??

My grandmother is still alive and well. I believe she owns record-breaking amounts of swishy?jump suits and Reebok sneakers. I lived with her off and on a lot through my life. I was a teenager by the time I realized she had ever been married to my grandfather. They were completely opposite people, I could never imagine them being together. Although my grandmother is very dainty and cute, in an old lady way, she is also much like Stone Cold Steve Austin. It?s almost like she has no emotion at all. She blinks a lot and has very dry skin. She doesn?t cry or say I love you.?Her ring finger on her left hand is missing because when she was on her honeymoon 120 years ago, she was going down a water slide and her wedding ring got caught on a tiny hook that was used to?hinge covers over the slide. She continued down the water slide and when she got into the pool, she had to go back up to retrieve her finger. Medicine then wasn?t what it is today so they couldn?t reattache?the finger. You always know when my grandmother is around because her glove only has 3 fingers on it. She?s always cold. She has spent more than half of her life giving the shocker.

My Paternal Grandparents

It is difficult to mention these two because I only met them twice in my life and it was prior to age 8. They are from Ohio. The first time I met them, we had to make the trip to visit my grandfather in the hospital. He was severely diabetic and due to complications, he was having his leg amputated from the knee down. We got there the day before the surgery. I remember?seeing him for the first time?in a hospital bed and not being able to take my eyes off?the leg. Due to lack of oxygen in the extremity, it was solid black from the knee down. To this day, I don?t think I?ve ever seen anything that scary.?A few years later, we visited for his funeral.?My grandmother is still alive, but refuses to talk to us. I don?t know why, but truthfully I don?t care enough to find out.

My Miscellaneous Brothers

I was about 12 when this boy came knocking on my door, looking for my dad. I had to let him know that we hadn?t seen or heard from him in years at that point. He went on to tell me that he was my brother. A half-brother. What was more bizarre, is that he has the same first, middle and last name as my older brother. This new brother was about 3 years older than my older brother.?Confusing, I know. ?Apparently, my father had abandoned their family as well and this kid came looking for him because he wanted to punch him in the face. This new brother also has a brother. So?I have a grand total of two half brothers. One of which I have still never met.

To top it off, when my mother got married, I gained two step brothers. They are very nice boys who love to hunt/fish/kill everything. It is difficult for me to find common ground with these guys. I use my fall back plan and get them drunk whenever we are together. One of them is getting close to turning 21. The other is still a few years away.

My Drunk Step-Uncle

This gem also came into my family when my mother got married. This guy is perhaps the drunkest?man alive. He?s had two heart attacks. I love seeing him because he reminds me of a cartoon character. He has a blonde ponytail and rosy cheeks. Regardless of season, he is always wearing a sleeveless t-shirt, cut off denim shorts and untied work boots. He has a very bad stutter. On Memorial Day last year, I had gone to a picnic at my mother?s house. Somewhere around 2pm, this drunk step-uncle came screeching into the drive way. He parked on the grass and somehow, fell face first out of the passenger door of his car. When he walked up to the area we were sitting, it looked almost as if he was fighting gravity. I filmed it. After he grabbed a beer and said the N word a few times, he told us why he was in such bad shape. Apparently, the mexicans who live in the trailer across from his had been making a lot of noise and bothering him. He went over to their house to ?cuss them out? and they let their dogs attack him. He explained that he shouldn?t have gone over there after finishing both a 30 pack and a 12 pack that afternoon. That?s 42 beers before 2pm. He has become a wonderful addition to this family tree.

?

You can dispute the accuracy of this if you want, but I don?t have much else to say. This is my family.

James Cameron journeys to the Challenger Deep, lives to tell the tale in 3D (video)

Image
It's easy for life to imitate art when you're armed with near billion dollar coffers. Taking a cue from his 1989 hit, The Abyss, James Cameron made a solo plunge down to the deepest part of the Earth -- a spot seven miles below sea level known as the Challenger Deep -- and recorded his journey in 3D for our slack-jawed, couchbound amusement. The terrain, described by Cameron as both "desolate" and "lunar," is part of the Mariana Trench and had remained unexplored by humanity since the Trieste first touched down in 1960. That two man crew, hampered by the technological advancements of the time, didn't have the luxury of capturing the undersea trek, so when Cameron's footage finally hits screens, it'll be the planet's first peek at a truly alien world. Conspiracy theorists and New Age-y types will be disheartened by the lack of any reported close encounters of the aquatic or Steve Zissou kind, as the blockbuster filmmaker only spied a variety of small, whitish and, predominantly, eyeless creatures. The trip was seven years in the making, and involved the construction of the Deepsea Challenger -- the high-tech mini-sub which carted Cameron safely to the Pacific Ocean's depths and back. Curious to see what only the world's richest can experience first-hand? Then click on past the break for a brief docu-tease.

MADRID (AP) ? A Euro Vegas in down-and-out Spain?

Depending on whom you ask, it could be heaven-sent or a deal with the devil.

Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson's dream to build Europe's first Las Vegas-style resort in Spain would certainly bring much needed relief to an economy lurching into another recession and struggling with sky-high unemployment.

But the millions that would rain down come with strings attached: Adelson wants Spanish laws bent so that gamblers can smoke inside the casinos and new zoning regulations allowing him to send buildings soaring above the skyline. And not everyone is thrilled about the idea of Spain hosting a European Sin City that could attract prostitution and mafia gangs ? and add gambling addiction to the woes of already desperate Spaniards.

Still, Madrid and Barcelona are both vying to woo Adelson and the $22 billion he wants to invest to erect "Eurovegas" ? an array of six casinos, 12 hotels featuring 36,000 rooms, a convention center, three golf courses, shopping centers, bars and restaurants.

The two sites being eyed in Madrid each cover an area equivalent to 1,000 football fields.

Adelson and his company, Las Vegas Sands Corp., will decide by the summer which city to build in if they reach a deal with Spanish authorities.

To say that Spain needs his money would be an understatement.

The country's jobless rate is around 23 percent ? nearly 50 percent among those under age 25 ? and the economy is forecast to shrink by 1.7 percent this year. First-quarter GDP numbers are expected to show Spain has slipped into its second recession in three years.

"At a time like this, with so little to boost the economy, something like this is like manna falling from heaven," said Gayle Allard, an economist who specializes in labor market issues at IE Business School in Madrid.

Allard said that Spain is already a huge tourist draw, with its sunshine and great beaches, and a casino complex would build on those assets. Spain is regularly one of the world's three most visited countries, along with the United States and France.

Critics argue Eurovegas will bring more criminality to Spain just as the economy goes into a nose-dive. And they warn that while Spain's young people are in dire need of jobs, positions such as hotel maids, waiters and croupiers are not a recipe for success.

Fears abound that allowing Adelson to build skyward would create a massive eyesore for either picturesque city that gets the casino. The notion of easing Spain's smoking ban so gamblers can light up while trying their luck also horrifies anti-tobacco campaigners.

Adelson started looking at Spain as a possible site for a European gambling magnet in 2007, but years of negotiations with Socialists who ruled then went nowhere.

The Socialists lost power last year as voters vented frustration over the dismal economy. Now the more business-friendly Popular Party is in charge, and this, along with the downturn, means authorities are probably more amenable to welcoming Adelson.

Gambling is legal in Spain. But its casinos, and others in Europe, are associated with a more snooty clientele and ambiance, not the festive, anything-goes atmosphere of Vegas.

"There is no one place in Europe that is fun to go to and play the slots or play tables or have a good time with an adult couple or family," Adelson said in a meeting with investors in New York last September. He declined to be interviewed for this story.

The hotels and casinos and all the rest would be built in three phases over the course of 10 years. Adelson says the project would create 260,000 jobs, 190,000 of them directly.

"It is a very ambitious project," said Jesus Sainz, president of PromoMadrid, a company which is owned by the Madrid regional government and has been negotiating with Adelson's people.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. surpassed Caesars Entertainment Corp. last year as the world's largest gaming corporation, posting profits of $1.27 billion in 2011. Sands operates properties in Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore.

Gaming investors have sniffed out Spain before. A few years ago, Harrah's Entertainment Inc. ? now known as Caesars ? explored the idea of building a casino complex, albeit smaller than the one being considered now, in Ciudad Real, 200 kilometers (130 miles) south of Madrid. But nothing came of it.

What's changed things now is Spain's economic crisis.

The Popular Party seems open to the Eurovegas idea, although Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's office declined to comment for this story. Allard, of the business school, said that "if the project is viable, the government is going to collaborate and is going to play ball."

Allard said Spain lures lots of free-spending Russian, Chinese and Arab tourists and would be a perfect draw for travelers with a taste for blackjack or roulette.

Madrid was first in expressing interest years ago, with Barcelona jumping in more recently when the regional government changed hands from Socialist to center-right, pro-business Catalan nationalists. The Barcelona site is a wetlands area far from the city center but with a view of the Mediterranean.

In Madrid, one site is a deserted expanse near a shanty town and the other is next to a middle-class suburb called Alcorcon. People there are torn between the lure of jobs and the prospect of prostitutes flooding in.

"Ten years from now, my daughter will be 24 and I would not like her to live in a city with this kind of business," said Pilar Torres, a 44-year-old Alcorcon resident who is unemployed.

An anti-Eurovegas association held a rally in Madrid last week in which Adelson was mocked as an economic messiah, his pockets overflowing with dollars.

Juan Garcia, a spokesman for the association, said a gambling haven is no answer to Spain's crisis.

"I think a casino would be a waste of brain power and labor, and instead endorses an activity that has little do with research, innovation and development," Garcia said.

Daily Kos Elections Polling Wrap: Mitt Romney can win the GOP primary. But can he win the general?

Apparently, I am no better than the rest of the traditional press. Just yesterday, I wrote the following:

The best Romney can hope for, and this is a very legitimate possibility, is that the media will treat the nomination contest as a non-event from this point forward. That would allow him to train all of his attention on Barack Obama, and try to frame the race as a general election contest from this point forward.
So, to what subject am I devoting not just my analysis after the jump today, but also an entire piece this weekend? Romney as a general election candidate.

Oh, the horror...

GOP PRIMARY POLLING:

NATIONAL (Gallup Tracking): Romney 38, Santorum 27, Gingrich 14, Paul 9

CONNECTICUT (Quinnipiac): Romney 42, Santorum 19, Gingrich 13, Paul 9

LOUISIANA (Rasmussen): Santorum 43, Romney 31, Gingrich 16, Paul 5

OREGON (SurveyUSA): Romney 38, Santorum 31, Gingrich 14, Paul 9

GENERAL ELECTION TRIAL HEATS:
NATIONAL (PPP): Obama d. Paul (46-43); Obama d. Santorum (48-45); Obama d. Romney (48-44); Obama d. Gingrich (50-42)

NATIONAL (Rasmussen Tracking): Obama d. Romney (47-44); Obama d. Santorum (49-41)

"SWING STATES"* (Purple Strategies): Obama d. Romney (48-44); Obama d. Santorum (50-42)

CONNECTICUT (Quinnipiac): Obama d. Romney (53-37); Obama d. Santorum (55-35)

NEW HAMPSHIRE (American Research Group): Obama d. Romney (48-41); Obama d. Santorum (48-37)

OREGON (SurveyUSA): Obama d. Paul (48-39); Obama d. Santorum (49-40); Obama d. Romney (50-39); Obama d. Gingrich (54-34)

VIRGINIA (Rasmussen): Obama d. Romney (51-42); Obama d. Santorum (53-39)

(*) "Swing States" defined as Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Today's data, as has been the case for most of the recent numbers, paints a picture of Mitt Romney being the guy for the GOP. At least, someday he'll be the guy. But what about November? A few thoughts beyond the fold.

So, assuming that Mitt Romney eventually limps and stumbles his way to the Republican nomination, how does he stand for November?

Let's start with a stipulation: by definition, he should start in an incrementally better position, in the Electoral College, than John McCain had in 2008. The reason, as you can see here, is that reapportionment has shifted a total of six electoral votes into the GOP column. Therefore, even if the breakdown by states was identical to 2008, the Obama victory would shift from 365-173 to 359-179.

Also, though this is exceptionally debatable, let's toss another dozen electoral votes to Mitt Romney. Let's give him the lone electoral vote Barack Obama snagged in Nebraska, and let's also hand over the biggest Obama upset special in 2008: Indiana. There haven't been many polls in either state, but what little polling there has been in Indiana has leaned GOP, and the polls on Nebraska's Omaha-based 2nd district has been mixed. So, to be conservative, let's throw all 12 electoral votes into the GOP column, decreasing the Obama edge to 347-191.

After that, however, is where it gets tricky for the GOP. Name a state beyond that which meets the following two characteristics: (1) it was an Obama 2008 state; (2) it is a state where Mitt Romney has led in the majority of the 2012 polling there.

This is the math exercise I will be embarking on before Sunday, when my extensive piece on this race will appear here at Daily Kos. But my immediate guess is this: the GOP needs an additional 79 electoral votes to forge a coalition that will elect Mitt Romney. I am going to say with total confidence that there are not states comprising 79 electoral votes which have consistently sided with the GOP in this past year.

For just one example, take the commonwealth of Virginia, which was polled today by the House of Ras. Not only can we no longer call the GOP a betting favorite in Virginia, it is difficult after the last three polls to even say that the state is a toss-up right now. Rasmussen had the Obama lead at nine. Quinnipiac also had the Obama lead at nine. NBC/Marist, memorably, had that race at a 17-point Obama lead earlier this month. It's pretty hard to throw those 13 electoral votes into the GOP column, barring a serious shift in voter preferences.

Take even the House of Ras on this subject. If, as they have posited in the past few weeks, Obama leads in Ohio, Nevada, Florida, and Virginia, how does the GOP make it to 270? And that's Rasmussen!

A lot can change in eight months, needless to say. But it is hard for me to take any analyst seriously right now who doesn't make the president the betting favorite based on what we're seeing right now. And I'll have the numbers to prove it, come Sunday.

Old Republic Combines Its Mortgage Guaranty and Consumer ...

CHICAGO, March 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Old Republic International Corporation (NYSE: ORI) today announced it is combining its Consumer Credit Indemnity (CCI) division with its Mortgage Guaranty (MI) segment.? The two operations offer similar insurance coverages, share the same senior management leadership, and have been operating in run-off mode since 2008 and August 2011, respectively.? With this action, the Old Republic Mortgage Guaranty Group (ORMGG) has been re-named the Republic Financial Indemnity Group, Inc. (RFIG).? RFIG will include a credit indemnity insurer, three existing mortgage insurers, and four related services entities, all of which will be separately held.

Recessionary conditions in U.S. housing finance beginning in 2007 have erased the long-term profitability of the MI and CCI insurance lines and led to substantial losses.? As a result, capital funds identified with these lines at year-end 2006 have been fully depleted.? While Old Republic maintains a long-term strategic interest in these lines, it has stopped additional capital funding for them since they no longer meet its enterprise risk management disciplines and business diversification objectives.? These circumstances also reinforce Old Republic's resolve to: 1) safeguard policyholders' interests in its general (property and liability), title, and life & health insurance subsidiaries by maintaining long-established protective barriers around these companies; and 2) protect economic values inuring to the Company's debt holders and shareholders.?

In consideration of all these factors, Old Republic's management and board of directors have concluded that a necessary future recapitalization of the combined business can best be effected by separating these operations from the ORI holding company.? Combining the MI and CCI lines, while maintaining their separateness within RFIG, provides the corporate structure to achieve this. ?Management and the board are evaluating alternative approaches to most effectively and economically achieve these objectives and expect to announce a plan in the near term.

Financial Supplement/Statistical Exhibit

The plan will require certain regulatory approvals, including the authorization of various inter-company general insurance agreements for the CCI line, and the transfer of a small general insurance subsidiary to RFIG.? In anticipation of executing the plan, several explanatory pro forma financial schedules have been developed to portray the likely effects a separation of the MI and CCI lines would have on Old Republic's segmented and consolidated financial statements. The schedules are included in a Statistical Exhibit posted on the Company's website: www.oldrepublic.com.? Here is a listing of the schedules and their content:

About Old Republic

Chicago-based Old Republic International Corporation is one of the nation's 50 largest publicly held insurance organizations.? Its most recent financial statements reflect consolidated assets of approximately $16.0 billion and common shareholders' equity of $3.77 billion, or $14.76 per share.? Its current stock market valuation is approximately $2.7 billion, or $10.56 per share.

The Company is organized as an insurance holding company whose subsidiaries actively market, underwrite, and provide risk management services for a wide variety of coverages mostly in the general and title insurance fields. A long-term interest in mortgage guaranty and consumer credit indemnity lines has devolved to a run-off operating mode in recent times.

The nature of Old Republic's business requires that it be managed for the long run. For the 25 years ended in 2011, the Company's total market return, with dividends reinvested, has grown at a compound annual rate of 9.1 percent per share. For the same period, the total market return, with dividends reinvested, for the S&P 500 Index has grown at a 9.3 percent compound annual rate. During those years, Old Republic's shareholders' equity account, including cash dividends, has risen at an average annual rate of 10.8 percent per share, and the regular cash dividend has grown at a 10.0 percent compound annual rate. According to the most recent edition of Mergent's Dividend Achievers, Old Republic is one of just 91 qualifying companies, out of several thousand publicly held U.S. corporations, that have posted at least 25 consecutive years of annual dividend increases.

Safe Harbor Statement

Historical data on the operating results, liquidity, and other performance indicators applicable to an insurance enterprise such as Old Republic do not necessarily indicate future results. In addition to the factors cited in the next paragraph, the following items can affect period-to-period comparisons in future operating performance: the long-term nature of the insurance business, changes in seasonal and annual patterns in premium production and incidence of claims, changes in yields obtained on invested assets, changes in government policies and free markets affecting inflation rates and general economic conditions, and changes in legal precedents or the application of law affecting the settlement of disputed and other claims.

Some of the oral or written statements made in the Company's reports, news releases, and conference calls following earnings releases, can constitute "forward-looking statements" within the meaning of the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Of necessity, any forward-looking statements involve assumptions, uncertainties, and risks that may affect the Company's future performance. With regard to Old Republic's General Insurance segment, its results can be particularly affected by the level of market competition?which is typically a function of available capital and expected returns on capital among competitors, the levels of interest and inflation rates, and periodic changes in claim frequency and severity patterns caused by natural disasters, weather conditions, accidents, illnesses, work-related injuries, and unanticipated external events. ?Mortgage Guaranty and Title Insurance results can be affected by similar factors, and by changes in national and regional housing demand and values, the availability and cost of mortgage loans, employment trends, and default rates on mortgage loans. ?Mortgage Guaranty results, in particular, may also be affected by various risk-sharing arrangements with business producers, as well as the risk management and pricing policies of government sponsored enterprises. ?Life and health insurance earnings can be affected by the levels of employment and consumer spending, variations in mortality and health trends, and changes in lapsed policy rates. At the parent holding company level, operating earnings or losses generally reflect the amount of debt outstanding and its cost, interest income on temporary holdings of short-term investments, and period-to-period variations in the costs of administering the Company's widespread operations.

A more detailed listing and discussion of the risks and other factors that affect Old Republic's risk-taking insurance business are included in Part I, Item 1A - Risk Factors, of the 2011 Form 10-K report; and Part II, Item 1A - Risk Factors, of its most recent Form 10-Q report to the Securities and Exchange Commission.? These reports are specifically incorporated here by reference.

Of diapers and drugs, Iran's trouble paying bills

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Like everyone, Iranians need diapers. Fred Harrington has built a business by selling Iran the raw materials to make them.

The Redmond, Washington, businessman, who exports to Iran under a humanitarian license from the U.S. Treasury Department, says he is owed close to $3.8 million by Iranian companies who cannot pay him because of the latest U.S. and European Union sanctions.

He is not alone.

U.S. firms from major drug makers like Merck & Co. to mom-and-pop outfits like Harrington's American Pulp & Paper Corp. are finding it hard to get paid even for medicines and other humanitarian exports explicitly allowed by the U.S. Treasury, according to officials, sanctions lawyers and the companies.

"Everything from aspirin to multivitamins - you name it - it's all jammed up," said Cari Stinebower, an international trade lawyer with Crowell & Moring, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm, and a former counsel for the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

The payments gridlock is a testament to the effectiveness of the latest round of financial sanctions, which aim to force Iran to curb its nuclear program and which have made the Iranian banking sector even more radioactive for major global banks.

But they also undercut the long-standing U.S. argument that its sanctions are not meant to squeeze the Iranian people but rather the Islamic republic's leaders and their suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons.

"I am not against punishing Iran for being a rogue country but the United States, or the Europeans, when they start imposing sanctions, then they must consider, also their own companies," Harrington said.

Harrington, an Iranian American who changed his name from Farhad Fouroohi, had to lay off three people in February because of the payments delays, cutting his staff from seven to four.

OUTSIZE IMPACT

While a new U.S. law targeting financial institutions that deal with the central bank of Iran has garnered much attention, sanctions lawyers said the January 23 blacklisting of one Iranian bank had a more immediate, sharp effect on humanitarian trade.

Bank Tejarat, Iran's third-largest bank, was "designated" - or blacklisted - under a U.S. executive order targeting people and companies that promote the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction as well as their support networks.

The action has the effect of cutting them off from the U.S. financial system, along with any bank who deals with them - a risk that many banks find impossible to take.

Over the last five years, the Treasury has blacklisted 23 such Iranian-linked entities, gradually squeezing Iran's ability to do business with the world.

Tejarat's blacklisting has had an outsize impact, sanctions lawyers said, because it had been the last major Iranian bank available for legal trade with Iran. With it now off limits, companies are having to sift through smaller banks to find some that can carry out the transactions - which is no mean feat.

"That has had a huge ripple effect," said Douglas Jacobson, a Washington attorney who focuses on sanctions work.

"On the one hand, you can get a license. The government is saying, 'OK you can sell.' But the practical reality is that you can't get paid," he added.

The lawyer said one of his clients is out several hundred thousand dollars because of the Tejarat blacklisting and that he knows of several medical companies that have stopped exporting to Iran because of the payment problems.

"Where you had a small window of opportunity previously, that window is now almost completely closed," said Erich Ferrari, another lawyer who specializes in trade sanctions. The decision on Thursday by Belgium-based SWIFT, the world's biggest electronic payment system, to expel all Iranian banks blacklisted by the European Union, may make it even harder to?conduct transactions, sanctions lawyers said.

The United States has gradually tightened sanctions because of Iran's failure to answer questions about its nuclear program, which Washington and its allies suspect is a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says it is solely to generate power.

The sanctions became much tougher when U.S. President Barack Obama on December 31 signed a law designed to choke off Iran's oil sales by threatening to cut off foreign banks from the U.S. financial system if they dealt with Iran's central bank.

Merck & Co., the world's third-largest pharmaceuticals company, said it has licenses to sell Iran products to treat diabetes, cancer, respiratory illnesses and infections.

"(Merck) has?experienced a challenging situation in 2012 in terms of securing payments for goods shipped," said Merck spokeswoman Kelley Dougherty, adding that the company was open to ideas that would facilitate humanitarian exports to Iran.

Pfizer Inc, the world's largest pharmaceuticals maker whose flagship products include the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor, acknowledged challenges in getting paid for Iranian sales, saying it would work through them. Both Merck and Pfizer declined to provide details.

"There is some turbulence right now," said Pfizer spokesman Peter O'Toole, saying the company wished to ensure that Iranian patients have access to needed medications. "If we have to work through a little turbulence, that's what we'll do."

A Treasury Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity said its approach on humanitarian exports to Iran had not changed, though he did not directly address questions about the difficulty that U.S. companies were having getting paid.

"There's been no decrease in applications to OFAC to export humanitarian items to Iran," the spokesman added. "The recent sanctions imposed on Iran have not changed our approach to the export of food, medicine and medical devices to Iran."

For companies such as Pfizer or Merck, exports to Iran are a tiny fraction of their worldwide business.

If ordinary Iranians ultimately suffer shortages of drugs and medical devices, the Iranian government may use it to score public relations points with their own people against the West, much as former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein did in Iraq.

"They need to defend their position to their own population. They need to continue to create this image of an international community that is implacably aligned against the interests of a defenseless Iran," said Suzanne Maloney, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Saban Center for Middle East Policy.

"This kind of imagery would play into that and it'll have a certain resonance among Iranians who have a long experience with sanctions, resent the impact of sanctions on ordinary citizens and believe ... the government is well able to insulate itself."

"WASHINGTON'S EARS ARE CLOGGED"

The United States bars virtually all trade with Iran. It cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 1980 after Iranian students seized its embassy in Tehran and ultimately held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.

Last year, the United States exported only $229.5 million worth of goods to Iran.

"Woodpulp and pulpwood" - which includes the raw material for diapers - accounted for $57.9 million, followed by $50.1 million for pharmaceuticals, $29.5 million for plastics, $23.4 million for unmanufactured farm products and $22 million for medical devices, according to U.S. Commerce Department data..

Under a quirk in U.S. law, the export of diapers to Iran is not allowed but the export of fluff pulp, their key component, is, creating an opportunity for Harrington to sell it to Iran.

Of the $26.6 million in sales his company had last year, Iran accounted for roughly 70 percent.

The impact has been so big that Harrington wrote U.S. President Barack Obama a plaintive letter on February 9, saying the latest U.S. sanctions "have virtually stopped our business overnight."

"We would appreciate your comments and any suggestions as to what we could possibly do at this point," Harrington wrote. "From our perspective, it would seem that there is nothing left to be done except to close our doors."

Harrington, who argues there should have been a "wind-down" period to clear existing payments, has received no reply.

"We have not received any reaction and I don't expect to," he said. "Washington's ears are clogged. They don't hear it at all."
