Opening statements begin in Jackson death trial

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? An attorney for Michael Jackson's mother says AEG Live owed it to the pop superstar to properly investigate the doctor held criminally responsible for his death.

The comments by Brian Panish came Monday during opening statements in Katherine Jackson's lawsuit against concert giant AEG Live, which she says should be held civilly liable for her son's 2009 death.

Panish says AEG is the only entity that claims it didn't know about Jackson's addiction to prescription drugs.

AEG officials have denied any wrongdoing, and its lawyers have said company executives could not have foreseen the circumstances that led to a physician giving Jackson doses of the anesthetic propofol as a sleep aid.

A jury of six men and six women will determine whether AEG is liable and any damages award.

Concert giant AEG Live owed a duty to properly investigate the doctor who treated Michael Jackson, an attorney for the singer's mother told a jury Monday morning.

"His stirring voice, his musical genius, his creativity and his generosity and his huge heart was extinguished forever," attorney Brian Panish said in opening statements of a civil lawsuit filed over Jackson's June 2009 death. Katherine Jackson is suing AEG claiming it failed to properly investigate the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter over Jackson's death.

"You're going to hear the whole story about what happened in the death of Michael Jackson," Panish said.

Panish made his remarks in an opening presentation filled with slides detailing the case against AEG, which was promoting Jackson's planned comeback concerts, "This Is It."

Jackson's mother, brother Randy and sister Rebbie sat in the front row of the courtroom as Panish detailed aspects of Jackson's life.

An attorney for AEG is expected to begin addressing the panel later Monday.

Millions, and possibly billions, of dollars are at stake. A jury of six men and six women will determine any damage award.

Katherine Jackson sued the company in September 2010, claiming it failed to properly investigate former physician Conrad Murray before allowing him to serve as Jackson's tour doctor. She is also suing on behalf of her son's three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket.

AEG denies it hired Murray and its attorneys have said they could not have foreseen the circumstances that led to Jackson's death at age 50. A jury convicted Murray of giving Jackson a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol in 2011. The hospital-grade anesthetic was being administered as a sleep aid.

Panish told jurors they would be putting together a puzzle, with three pieces being Jackson, Murray and AEG Live.

He told the panel that Jackson suffered from addiction to prescription medications and Demerol at times during his life, and the problem increased when he was keeping up a rigorous schedule. Panish cited a 1984 accident that injured Jackson during a Pepsi commercial suit as causing the singer tremendous physical pain throughout his life.

"Over the years Michael family's and people who knew him believed he had a problem with prescription medication," Panish told jurors. He said the only group that would claim they didn't know about Jackson's addiction issues were AEG and its executives.

The lawyer showed a brief clip of Jackson rehearing for the "This Is It" shows and a clip of the singer dancing in the early stages of his presentation. He also showed footage of 1999 show in Munich in which Jackson was performing when a bridge dropped 50 feet with the singer on it. Despite pain, Jackson continued performing, Panish said.

Panish said Jackson turned to Demerol to relieve his pain.

Katherine Jackson and her two oldest grandchildren, Prince and Paris, are listed as possible witnesses. An AEG attorney said Monday that the company intends to call Murray as a witness in the case as well.

Murray did not testify at his criminal trial.

Panish told jurors they would have to determine who was responsible for Jackson's death.

"Michael paid the ultimate price. He died," Panish said. "Michael has taken responsibility."

The anti-immigration class across Europe has found many new adherents as of late, especially in the most economically devastated countries, like Greece and Italy. But now these Europeans might themselves become the unwelcome migrants, at least in Switzerland.

As I happened to be standing in the most intolerable immigration line that I've ever faced ? more on that later ? I read on my Twitter account that the Swiss government on Wednesday announced a new policy to cap residence permits for all of Western Europe. Switzerland, which is not part of the EU but joined the Schengen bloc that allows freedom of movement of people across European borders, says that it is being overwhelmed by arrivals from across the continent, to the tune of 80,000 people each year.

So it is invoking a ?safeguard clause? it negotiated during the 1999 Schengen treaty talk, which it already implemented for eight Central and Eastern European states. Now, as of May 1, residence permits for the citizens of 17 older EU states, from Germany to Spain, will be capped at 53,700 for a year.

According to the EU Observer, the Swiss said that the million-plus EU residents who live in the country have "had a positive impact ? in particular in terms of consumer spending and on the construction industry," but that restrictions are ?needed to make immigration more acceptable to society.?

The move drew immediate criticism from Brussels. ''The measures disregard the great benefits that the free movement of persons brings to the citizens of both Switzerland and the EU,? Catherine Ashton, EU foreign policy chief, said in a statement.

Is this a new manifestation of intolerance in Europe? The levels of resentment continent-wide against the migrants from Africa and the Middle East are already clearly documented, but in the midst of crisis, is Europe even excluding Europe? And what does that mean for identity and equality moving forward?

The possibility of a new, intra-European divide struck a chord for me, as I experienced my own "us vs. them" moment in France today.

Well, more than a moment. Eight hours, in fact.

That's how long I waited in a Paris prefecture along with Moroccans, Romanians, Malians, Senegalese, Tunisians, and Peruvians ? most of us, like me, there only to get information about what we needed to have with us, only to return and stand in line again.

I got to know my fellow immigrants well as we stood outside. Some around me had been in this line before, but were told they were missing a translation, a photocopy, or any of myriad document requirements that are not posted in their totality anywhere on the Internet ? or even on the wall of the prefecture where we line up ? but rather seem to be, at least from my informal surveys today, requested at the whim of whichever officer is behind the desk. One woman was told to bring back her CV.

Some of my linemates felt the French immigration officials were being deliberately obstructionist.

?They don?t want us to get the carte de sejour,? said the Malian, referring to the permission that allows foreigners to reside in France (and, with it, the right to tap into the country?s amazing social security system).

?They do everything they can to hold us back,? said the Romanian, who was on her third trip here ? and the third day lost on her job as a cleaning woman. Today, she was told that the pay stub she brought didn?t have the minimum number of hours on it, so she needed to bring in another stub. Another lost day of productivity for this poor woman.

Regardless of the motivations, one can see the "us vs. them" motif very clearly at the prefecture. On the one side, masses desperate to get in, and feeling unwelcome all the while. And on the other side of the glass wall, a society wanting to protect a social system that is replicated in few other places in the world.

By the end of the day in the unforgiving sun, some people were clearly losing their cool, me among them. (I, an American, was more indignant about the inefficiency than most, which makes me wonder if that?s a nationality trait, but that's a subject for another time.)

?But this can?t be!? I kept saying. ?How can people waste an entire day in a line ? and for nothing! Just to come back and stand in the line again??

?Welcome to France,? said the Malian, smiling.

(AP) ? New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH'-moh) says he's not talking about running for the Democratic nomination for president in 2016 and he's not waiting to see if Hillary Clinton runs.

Cuomo said Monday on public radio's "Capitol Pressroom" there is "no truth" to speculation that he is talking about presidential politics and strategy.

Cuomo says he's focused on his 2014 run for a second term as governor. He has never ruled out a run for president.

Clinton is often touted as a potential 2016 contender.

Cuomo has a campaign fund of more than $20 million and led New York's effort in legalizing same-sex marriage in 2011. This year, he pushed through the nation's first gun-control law after the Newtown, Conn., tragedy. His poll numbers have recently fallen from record highs.

(AP) ? The reeling Boston Celtics needed a spark of optimism and a surge of offense to keep their season going.

Jason Terry provided both.

The energetic guard who had struggled in the first three games cheered his teammates up when the Knicks were rallying, then scored the Celtics' last nine points in a 97-90 overtime win Sunday over the New York Knicks that avoided a four-game sweep.

"He's just one of those guys you want around your team, whether he's playing or not," Boston coach Doc Rivers said. "He brings sunshine."

And when he's playing well, he's hitting jumpers, even in the most critical situations.

"As long as there's time on the clock, as long as there is another game, it's an opportunity to do something special," Terry said.

That opportunity was slipping away when the Knicks overcame a 59-39 deficit early in the third quarter and took an 84-82 lead on Raymond Felton's jumper with 1:18 left in regulation. But Kevin Garnett hit a 16-footer jumper to tie the game 11 seconds later.

In overtime, Terry gave the Celtics the lead for good, 91-88, with a 3-pointer with 1:32 remaining.

Now he has another opportunity in New York in Game 5 on Wednesday night as the Celtics work toward becoming the first team in NBA history to win a series after trailing 3-0.

"We have to come out with the exact same aggression," Jeff Green said. "We just have to play every possession, every defensive possession, like it's our last."

But the Knicks still have a big advantage as they try for their first playoff series win in 13 years. All they need is one win out of a possible three games.

"We didn't shoot the ball well today at all and we still put ourselves in a position to win," said Carmelo Anthony, who led all scorers with 36 points but missed 25 of his 35 shots. "We're going back home with a lot of confidence."

Especially with J.R. Smith returning.

The NBA's Sixth Man of the Year was suspended for Sunday's game after hitting Terry with his elbow in New York's 90-76 win on Friday night. He scored 49 points in the first three games.

"We didn't make the plays coming down the home stretch. They did," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "J.R. is a big piece of what we do, but he wasn't here ... so I'm not using that as an excuse."

Terry was angry after being hit in the face by Smith, but something more important motivated him.

"It wasn't really the elbow," he said. "It was more (like) this is it. I mean, the season's over. You can leave it all out here tonight and go home for a long summer or you can live to play another day."

He conceded that his nose "still hurts right now. As long as I feel that, I guess I'll be thinking about it."

Paul Pierce led Boston with 29 points, Green added 26 and Terry had 18.

Felton scored 27 for New York two days after their Game 3 win in Boston.

"We did our job when we came here. We got us a win," he said. "That was our goal."

The Knicks made just 28.9 percent of their shots in falling behind 54-35 at halftime. But they tied it at 74 with 7:16 left in the fourth quarter on a layup by Iman Shumpert.

"We're a veteran ballclub so we don't panic," Jason Kidd said. "We had a great opportunity and we just couldn't close the door."

Garnett expected that.

"Good teams are going to make those runs," he said. "It's deflating, but we kept fighting. We found a way to get over the hump."

After Terry put Boston ahead 91-88 in overtime, Anthony made a fadeaway shot with 1:17 remaining. Then Terry sank a 15-footer that made it 93-90 with 50 seconds remaining.

Anthony followed with an off-target 3-pointer with 21 seconds to go and Terry was fouled by Steve Novak. He made both free throws then added a layup to close out the game. It came just in time for a player who failed to score in Game 1 for the first time in 88 playoff games.

"I had every intention of trying to make an impact on the game," Terry said. "If I wasn't making shots, I wanted to get a steal, get a rebound, any little thing to keep it going. Again, I'm going to coach AAU, but I don't want to do that right now."

The Celtics showed renewed energy early after being held below 80 points in each of the first three games. They were more aggressive and more physical than they had been.

"We knew they were going to come out like that," Anthony said. "They were fighting for dear life."

With leaders such as Pierce and Garnett, the Celtics have "tremendous" pride, Terry said. "Getting swept is something that no man that's been in this league that long wants to do. It's disheartening.

"Now we have to go into a hostile environment and they're going to be trying to get it over with. They don't want to come back here, but we do."

NOTES: Garnett finished with 13 points, 17 rebounds and six assists. ... The Knicks went 7 for 30 on 3-point shots. ... Boston had just three offensive rebounds while the Knicks grabbed 16. ... The Celtics have been swept six times in the 112 playoff series in their history. ... The Knicks were 19-2 in their previous 21 games. The Celtics were 5-14 in their previous 19. ... For the Celtics, Garnett, Green and Brandon Bass each had four fouls five minutes into the third quarter. Bass committed his fifth with 5:10 left in the period and fouled out with 4:27 to go in the game. ... Anthony committed his fourth with 4:08 remaining in the third.

Brain measurements predict math progress with tutoring

Structure associated with memory formation predicts learning ability

By Meghan Rosen

Web edition: April 29, 2013

A child who is good at learning math may literally have a head for numbers.

Kids? brain structures and wiring are associated with how much their math skills improve after tutoring, researchers report April 29 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Certain measures of brain anatomy were even better at judging learning potential than traditional measures of ability such as IQ and standardized test results, says study author Kaustubh Supekar of Stanford University. These signatures include the size of the hippocampus ? a string bean?shaped structure involved in making memories ? and how connected the area was with other parts of the brain.

The findings suggest that kids struggling with their math homework aren?t necessarily slacking off, says cognitive scientist David Geary of the University of Missouri in Columbia. ?They just may not have as much brain region devoted to memory formation as other kids.?

The study could give scientists clues about where to look for sources of learning disabilities, he says.

Scientists have spent years studying brain regions related to math performance in adults, but how kids learn is still ?a huge question,? says Supekar. He and colleagues tested IQ and math and reading performance in 24 8- and 9-year-olds, then scanned their brains in an MRI machine. The scans measured the sizes of different brain structures and the connections among them.

?It?s like creating a circuit diagram,? says study leader Vinod Menon, also of Stanford.

Next, the kids began an intensive one-on-one tutoring program that focused on speedy problem-solving and math skills such as counting strategies and basic arithmetic. After eight weeks and about 15 to 20 hours of tutoring, Menon, Supekar and colleagues tested the students? math abilities again and compared the kids? progress with their brain scans.

Overall, tutoring improved the kids? math skills, and the children with the biggest improvements had big hippocampuses that were well connected to brain regions that make memories and retrieve facts. ?

?It?s a very interesting and surprising finding,? says cognitive neuroscientist Robert Siegler of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. In adults, the hippocampus isn?t all that involved in math, he says. But in kids, ?it apparently is involved in math learning.?

Supekar thinks the findings could help educators tailor math tutoring strategies to different kids. ?Right now, math education is like a one-size-fits-all approach,? he says. One day, maybe 10 years from now, Supekar says, scientists might be able to scan children?s brains and place them into programs that cater to their specific mental signatures.

But for now, Menon says, ?It certainly behooves us to not give up on children who are slow to learn, and to think of alternate approaches to boost learning.?

Integrate a Wireless Charger Into Your Nightstand

If your phone supports wireless charging, but you don't want to clutter your nightstand with an ugly charging pad, you can build it straight into the furniture.

The video above does a great job of walking you through the process, but basically you'll use a chisel or router to create a cavity on the underside of the top of the nightstand, then slide the charger into place. The video uses an IKEA HEMNES nightstand and a Nokia Qi charger, but the basic steps should be similar no matter what you're working with. This particular arrangement does allow the charger to rest on the side wall of the nightstand, but if you aren't so lucky, a thin piece of scrap wood or metal will keep it from falling.

This is similar to a previously-mentioned project that added a PowerMat charger to a bookshelf, but this one doesn't require you to disassemble the charging base or permanently attach it to any furniture.

Maya Posch: Dreams: Relationships And Sexuality

Yesterday while taking a nap due to feeling exhausted and somewhat sick, I had a nightmare, one in which I had somehow met this guy and I found myself in his room which I knew to be inside his mother's house. I never saw her. The guy was kind of lonely so I wanted to help, yet throughout this all he exhibited a weird mean streak. Only afterwards did I realize that he had just been cruel. I eventually managed to sneak away and hide in a pile of firewood ("becoming the wood"). I woke up from this dream with one of my arms crossed over my chest, and both hands more or less clenched into a fist and my heart pounding like crazy.

Today I felt very agitated and depressed. After deciding to go take a nap again I got to my bed where something inside me kind of snapped. I felt so frustrated that I began to hit myself on the head over and over again until it started hurting so much that I could only drag myself into bed where I fell asleep. I then had another nightmare.

The initial part of the dream I do not remember well. I was apparently in the house in which I grew up, and yet it wasn't really. It was more light and spacious. There was something going on with food. Dinner, I think. I didn't feel like eating yet, until at one point I told my mother that she could warm up some of the pasta for me. Shortly after that I decided to go upstairs to my room. Nearing the top of the stair I could see that my room's door wasn't fully open as I had left it, but slightly ajar. Pushing it open I went into my room, which again wasn't really like my room of the past. Again more light and spacious. To my left was my bed, but in it was already someone. A woman. First she looked like Jeri Ryan, who was wriggling about under the blankets, seemingly amused. As I got closer and slid into the bed as well, she changed into a more African looking woman.

The moment I first saw a woman in my bed I didn't really feel anything, it was more a matter of observing a fact. Sliding into the bed next to her I found it to be a comforting thought to be next to her. Nice and cozy. Lying next to her she suddenly proposed getting intimate with me, which caught me by surprise. Working in my head through the logistics of such a thing, I found no problems there. Preparing, I had just changed from fully clothed into wearing the same but my pink pyjama pants instead of my jeans, when my mother came into the room to tell that dinner was ready. At this point I thought it would be a good idea to lock the door, so I got out and wandered over the other side of the room where I knew that the key probably was. I didn't find it, however.

Meanwhile the woman was just wandering about near the bed, talking with my mother or such. Her presence didn't incite anything negative, which I think meant that she was supposed to be there. Maybe she was my girlfriend after all. I decided to ditch the locked door idea and walked back over to her. My mother and the shadowy male figure I had sensed near her had left. As the woman and I came close we embraced. As we stood there, I started trembling. The really bad kind of shaking when you're either nervous or anxious enough to nearly bolt away to safety, or stricken with fear. I held her tightly as I said to her in a trembling voice that I felt so nervous, more than I had ever felt before. The image then suddenly distorted into nonsense.

As I woke up from that nightmare, I found both my arms firmly crossed on my chest and both hands tightly clenched into fists. I was crying.

Thanks to today's nightmare I think I now know what yesterday's nightmare was about, namely my experiences living together with that person. The second nightmare was for me a frightening look into how traumatizing sexuality has always been to me. I have actually experienced such trembling before with a real-life experience, though I chose to ignore it at the time. In the nightmare I chose to finally admit to myself that there's nothing which fills me more with terror than the thought of sexuality. I have just been forcing myself to try and accept it as something normal, while further damaging myself that way. My experiences the past months more so.

This all taken together it seems quite clear where some of my worst traumas are, and the worst roadblocks on the way to recovery. It's in some ways infuriating that a good, healthy relationship could be so beneficial to me, while the possibility of such a thing happening is sheer random chance. I could run into the perfect person tomorrow, or never. Maybe a plan B is in order, with a shrink specializing in sexuality poking and prodding me. Maybe.

Or maybe that's plan C and plan B is to become a bloody hermit.

Italy's Saccomanni moves from central banker to economy minister

By Gavin Jones

ROME (Reuters) - Italy's new Economy Minister Fabrizio Saccomanni is a 70-year-old central banker virtually unknown to the general public, who should reassure financial markets and the rest of Europe that the country will not stray from fiscal orthodoxy.

He has spent most of the last 46 years at the Bank of Italy, where he is deputy governor, having been passed over for the top job when Mario Draghi left in 2011 to head the European Central Bank.

Few can doubt Saccomanni's knowledge of economics and finance, but without any party affiliation he may lack the political clout to push through unpopular policies and risks being caught in the crossfire of cabinet infighting.

Draghi pushed for his deputy to replace him when he left the Bank of Italy but Saccomanni was opposed by Silvio Berlusconi's center-right government and compromise candidate Ignazio Visco leapfrogged him in the bank's hierarchy to become governor.

That was not the first time Saccomanni missed out. In 1998 he was expected to be Italy's first member of the ECB's six-member executive board but lost out to Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, who was more favored by Romano Prodi's center-left government.

Reserved but amiable, with a dry sense of humor, Saccomanni continues a tradition of technocrats who have made the move from the Bank of Italy to the economy ministry, the most recent examples being Padoa-Schioppa and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

He had to overcome the resistance of Berlusconi, a key stakeholder in Prime Minister Enrico Letta's left-right coalition, who said on Friday that Saccomanni would be an unacceptable appointment.

"We've had enough of technocrats, we have been through a government that created a disaster because of its excessive fiscal rigor," he said, in reference to Mario Monti's outgoing technocrat administration.

RECESSION

Saccomanni publicly backed Monti's austerity policies several times, abandoning his usual reserve to take on a role of convincing the press and investors of Italy's creditworthiness at the height of the euro zone debt crisis in 2011 and 2012.

However the central bank's forecasts proved far too optimistic on Italy's growth prospects as the country sank into its longest recession for 20 years.

As economy minister, Saccomanni's primary task will be to breathe life into the euro zone's third largest economy with structural reforms and growth-boosting measures without allowing public finances to go off the rails.

One thing the center-right and center-left components in the broad coalition most strongly agree on is that Italy must try to re-negotiate its fiscal targets with Brussels and win more leeway to stimulate the ailing economy.

With his economic experience, international credibility and fluent English, Saccomanni will be well placed to present Italy's case.

Despite his low public profile he has been well known to the international financial elite for decades. He sits on the board of the Bank for International Settlements in Basel and was one of the behind-the-scenes negotiators who prepared Italy for European Monetary Union in the 1990s.

A native of Rome, he studied economics at Milan's Bocconi University and later at Princeton University in the United States and joined the banking supervision department of the Bank of Italy in 1967.

He has been at the central bank ever since, excluding stints on secondment to the International Monetary Fund from 1970 to 1975 and as deputy president of the London-based European Bank for Re-construction and Development from 2003-2006.

Manti Te'o misses out on millions at NFL draft

Five months ago, Manti Te'o was a star.

The Notre Dame linebacker was one of the few college players who became a household name as he almost won the Heisman Trophy and led the Fighting Irish to the championship game.

On most draft projections, he was a top 10 pick. And as a potential millionaire endorser, he was, perhaps, No. 1.

That's before everything went wrong?the poor performance in the BCS title game, the fake-girlfriend hoax, the unimpressive scores at the scouting combine.

All of those forces resulted in the once-unthinkable on Thursday night: He was not even chosen in the first round. That's right?32 teams had the chance to select him, and 32 teams said "no thank you."

And he lost millions of dollars.

(Read More:New Facebook Tool, Te'o Scandal Fan Flames of Privacy Debate)

Look at it this way: If an NFL team picked Te'o at No. 5, he would have received a contract around four years and $20 million, with roughly half of that guaranteed. The millions from a rookie contract likely would have been matched by off-field endorsements.

None of that has materialized, and now he's looking at a contract that will pay him about half a million with, perhaps, $2 million guaranteed.

That's a net loss of at least $8 million.

"Even if he plays 10 years in the league, this is millions over the first four years that he never gets back," said sports economist Patrick Rishe. "His endorsement value took an even bigger hit."

"Here's a guy who was a hot commodity during his senior year at Notre Dame," Rishe aid. "If he performs well in the national championship game, if there isn't a story about the hoax girlfriend, and he had performed well at the combines, not only is he going to be picked in the top 10 and earn more money, but he's going to be more likely to get the endorsement deals."

(Read More: Get a Fake Facebook Girlfriend for $20)

Te'o must have known there was a possibility that he would not be picked because he did not attend the Radio City festivities at all Thursday night, avoiding the awkward possibility of multiple camera shots of him waiting in the green room as team after team passed him by.

That's what happened to West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, and he was so upset that he declined all interviews afterward.

Smith was projected as the top quarterback in the draft, but there was only one QB picked in the first round. His name was EJ Manuel and not Geno Smith.

As for Te'o, he no doubt will get drafted at some point.

The rest is up to him.

"If he plays and performs well, if he's a marketable player, if he's great in the community, all of those (other) things get washed away," Rishe said.

That's a lot of "ifs."

Part of 9/11 plane landing gear found in lower Manhattan

By Chris Francescani

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A piece of landing gear believed to be from one of the commercial airplanes that crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, has been discovered, wedged between two lower Manhattan buildings, police said on Friday.

The piece of landing gear found in a narrow alleyway behind 51 Park Place and 50 Murray Street in Manhattan's financial district includes a "clearly visible" Boeing identification number, New York City Police spokesman Paul Browne said.

Browne said the discovery was made on Wednesday by a construction crew inspecting the rear of the Park Place building. The location is the site of an Islamic prayer space and community center that opened amid controversy in the fall of 2011, two blocks from Ground Zero.

The piece of landing gear, wedged one story above ground, is about 5 feet high and 3 feet wide (0.9 meter).

Police have secured the area between the buildings and are treating it as a potential crime scene, said Browne.

Nearly 12 years after two commercial airliners smashed into the two Manhattan skyscrapers, destroying them and killing nearly 3,000 people, city officials continue to turn up debris from the attack and identify human remains.

It will be up to the New York City medical examiner's office to determine whether to sift the soil around the site where the landing gear was found for more evidence.

This month the medical examiner's office said 39 possible human remains were discovered in 9/11 debris hauled years ago to the New York City borough of Staten Island, according to CBS News.

Since 2006, the painstaking work has led to 34 new positive identifications of victims.

Elephant poaching on rise in chaos-hit Central African Republic

By Bate Felix

DAKAR (Reuters) - Elephant poachers are taking advantage of the chaos in Central African Republic to hunt down the animals in protected wildlife areas and openly sell their meat in village markets, campaigners said on Friday.

The killings were part of a wider surge in poaching, fuelled by growing Asian demand for ivory, that threatened the region's entire elephant population, eight organizations said.

Impoverished but mineral-rich Central African Republic was plunged into turmoil in March when rebels charged into the capital and ousted President Francois Bozize.

Bandits and rebel fighters continue to roam large parts of the remote country, aid groups say.

The World Wildlife Fund said its offices in the protected Dzanga-Sangha area had been looted three times in the past month and it had pulled out staff.

"The situation is really quite dangerous," said the WWF's head of policy in the region, Bas Huijbregts.

Dzanga-Sangha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to 3,400 forest elephants, smaller than their cousins on the African savannah with straighter, slimmer tusks.

The WWF said it and other campaigners had "received alarming reports from their field operations that elephants are being slaughtered in the violence-ridden Central African Republic (CAR)... initial reports indicate it may be extensive."

Eight conservation organizations working in the Congo Basin met in Brazzaville to propose ways for governments to tackle the rampant poaching, which claims an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 African elephants each year.

The groups, who also included the African Parks Network, TRAFFIC and the Wildlife Conservation Society, called on the African countries to build up their links with China and Thailand, two of Asia's biggest ivory importers, to find a solution to the crisis.

Representatives from the region's governments will meet next week to discuss the proposals.

Rhinos have already been hunted to extinction in the region due to demand for their horns for Asian medicinal concoctions.

Looking For Video Marketing Help? Try These Tips On For Size

Looking For Video Marketing Help? Try These Tips On For Size

Is your marketing strategy old and tired? You should be if you want to attract more customers. Has video marketing occurred to you? If the answer is no, it?s time to try it out. This is a fantastic method that can reach a lot of people. These video marketing tips can help you see what to do.

Always provide some type of call to action at the end of each video. Lead folks to your products, and tell them what to do to get them. Have concise and clear instructions in the upcoming step to be sure they follow it as soon as they can. Offer an incentive and give a sense of urgency to get viewers to act quickly.

Put your video on the website you run, as well as posting it on video sharing sites. This helps viewers see the content within your web page, while also having an easy access to the actual services or products. Don?t worry about losing views, as Google counts views of a video regardless of whether they are from YouTube itself or embedded on another site.

TIP! Short videos are better than long once. Your viewers? attention will wander if your video rambles on.

Perfection is overrated. You do not have to invest in state-of-the-art equipment in order to create a quality video. More often than not, the computer you currently own will be more than enough to get the job done. You can also use the camera on your smartphone if you need to. Adopt a professional attitude, provide your audience with useful information and edit your video before you release it.

It?s important to be transparent when making videos. You need to appear real. As people become more familiar with you, they will want to buy from you because they trust you. Your face will be permanently linked with the products you sell.

It?s vital that you present yourself as an honest and upstanding person in your videos. Never have a hidden agenda. When attempting to sell one of your products, let them know this. Begin developing relations with your viewers by using the comments feature. Improve your reputation and become known for your expertise in your business? niche by networking on your video page.

TIP! If you do not feel comfortable shooting a video of yourself, consider using screenshots. You might be one of the many people who do not feel comfortable appearing onscreen.

Try having a contest for your videos on your site. These can be funny or serious, depending on what your users want to do. User submitted videos are perfect opportunities for the viewers to take the stand and introduce themselves to their fellow peers online.

Add music. If you think about it, you?ll figure out that music makes videos more appealing. Find music that fits with your message, and put it in your video. This will convert more customers in the long run. In addition, if you hate showing yourself on video, the music can help with this.

Do you have some frequently asked questions that many people want the answers to? Videos are a great way to address these. Providing brief, simple videos as a sort of ?How To Guide? helps to inform and educate your viewers, making them more likely to trust your brand and make a purchase.

TIP! Start your videos by asking a common question or posing a problem that people have probably encountered. By the time you are finished shooting the video, you should have provided amazing solutions and answers that people can really use.

Try to keep your video from sounding like you are selling something. If all of your videos are little more than sales pitches, audiences will lose interest fast. People will want to watch your videos if they provide valuable content, such as useful advice, answers to questions or interesting demonstrations.

It?s a good idea to post a short video that discusses the background of your business. Talk about what products or services you?re selling and why your viewers should register for your mailing list. Give sign-ups a reward, like a coupon or eBook. When your viewers see that there is a real person behind the product, it improves your credibility.

Always begin with a warm greeting when employing video marketing, as this helps to engage your audience. Allow them to get to know you and your business prior to discussing your true intent. Refresh their memory by repeating your personal name and the name of your business as you close your video.

TIP! Experienced video markets know the importance of promptly responding to comments. Sometimes the only thing standing between the customer and a sale is a single, simple question.

Stories appeal to everyone! Do you have any amusing or inspiring stories that you can share about your business? Talk about an event for charity that you helped out with. It is also a great idea to have product endorsements and referrals from your customers about your business if possible.

You should consider using a ?how-to? video to promote your business. Be sure this video provides all the information the viewer needs. Do not try to use the video as a ploy to force viewers to purchase your product as that will only alienate them from your product. People will use your company if you are open and honest and share relevant content with them.

Do not quit video marketing when you don?t get what you want immediately. Obtain feedback from the audience to improve the videos. You will see your videos getting better and better through practice.

TIP! Podcasting is an underused type of video marketing. This can help you make a little money while marketing your videos to a larger list of possible customers.

Time lapse photography is useful when you?re doing video marketing. Run a video camera in your place of business for a day and let it capture raw footage. Then edit it into an amazing video. Customers will enjoy a day in the life of your business.

As you start to know more about video marketing, your understanding of the possibilities will expand. You can do many things with video marketing that can help you gain customers. You can certainly reach a broader audience and boost profits.

TIP! Humor can be a useful tool in video marketing. Boring, dull advertisements are not that interesting to most people.

Forthcoming study explores use of intermittent fasting in diabetes as cardiovascular disease

Los Angeles, CA (April 26, 2013) Intermittent fasting is all the rage, but scientific evidence showing how such regimes affect human health is not always clear cut. Now a scientific review in the British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease published by SAGE, suggests that fasting diets may help those with diabetes and cardiovascular disease, alongside established weight loss claims.

Intermittent fasting fasting on a given number of consecutive or alternate days has recently been hailed as a path to weight loss and improved cardiovascular risk. A team led by James Brown from Aston University has evaluated the various approaches to intermittent fasting in the scientific literature. They searched specifically for advantages and limitations in treating obesity and type 2 diabetes using fasting diets.

The basic format of intermittent fasting is to alternate days eating 'normally' with days when calorie consumption is restricted. This can either be done on alternative days, or where two days each week are classed as 'fasting days'. These types of intermittent fasting have been shown in trials to be as effective as or more effective than counting calories every day to lose weight. Evidence from clinical trials shows that fasting can limit inflammation, improve levels of sugars and fats in circulation, and reduce blood pressure. Our fasting bodies change how they select which fuel to burn, improving metabolism and reducing oxidative stress.

For people with obesity, only one drug (orlistat) is currently available in the UK, and gastric surgery is a relatively rare and expensive alternative. Dietary changes remain the most common intervention used for obese people. Fasting is known to help, but former treatments were based on intermittent starving. Today's intermittent fasting regimes are easier to stick to, and are proven to help remove excess pounds melt away.

Scientists have known since the 1940s that intermittent fasting helps us lose weight, and can cut the incidence of diabetes in lab animals. Recent studies have also confirmed that restricting calorie intake could possibly reverse type 2 diabetes in some people. Researchers measured improved pancreatic function and fewer of the fatty deposits associated with insulin resistance were present in fasting subjects.

A healthy heart

In animal models, scientists have shown that intermittent fasting has some cardiovascular benefits that appear similar to exercising, such as improving blood pressure and heart rate, and lowering cholesterol. Fasting also appears to aid those with ischemic heart disease. Fasting may even protect the heart by raising levels of adiponectin, a protein that has several important roles in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and vascular biology.

"Intermittent fasting might achieve much of the benefit seen with bariatric surgery, but without the costs, restriction on numbers and risks associated with surgery," according to lead author, James Brown. "Whether intermittent fasting can be used as a tool to prevent diabetes in those individuals at high risk or to prevent progression in those recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes remains a tantalising notion and we are currently in preparation for clinical trials to assess the effectiveness of this form of lifestyle intervention in various patient groups."

Intermittent fasting is an increasingly popular diet plan that hit the headlines in the run up to Christmas 2012 after the release of a book on the subject. Proponents claim that in addition to weight loss, the diet can lead to longer life, and protection against disease, particularly conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

38 die in mental hospital fire outside Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) ? At least 38 people died in a fire in a psychiatric hospital outside Moscow late Thursday night.

Police said the fire, which broke out at about 2 a.m. local time (6 p.m. Eastern, 2200 GMT) in the one-story hospital in the Ramenskoye settlement, was caused by a short circuit, the RIA Novosti reported on Friday.

Officials from the Russian Investigative Committee later said they are looking at poor fire regulations and short circuit as possible causes.

By early Friday morning, investigators listed 38 people ? 36 patients and two doctors ? as dead. Only three nurses managed to escape. The emergency services also posted a list of the patients indicating they ranged in age from 20 to 76.

Health Ministry officials said that hospital housed patients with severe mental disorders. Vadim Belovoshin from the emergency situations ministry official told the Itar-TASS news agency that the windows in the hospital were barred but said there were two fire escapes.

Belovoshin also said that it took fire fighters an hour to get to the hospital following an emergency call because a local ferry across the river was closed and the fire fighters had to make a detour.

Deadly fires are common in Russia because of wide-spread violations of fire safety rules.

SAVAR, Bangladesh (AP) ? With deep cracks visible in the walls, police had ordered a Bangladesh garment building evacuated the day before its deadly collapse, but the factories flouted the order and kept more than 2,000 people working, officials said Thursday. At least 175 people died when a huge section of the eight-story building splintered into a pile of concrete slabs.

The disaster in the Dhaka suburb of Savar came less than five months after a blaze killed 112 people in a garment factory and underscored the unsafe conditions faced by Bangladesh's garment workers, who produce clothes for brands worn around the world. Some of the companies in the building that fell say their customers include retail giants such as Wal-Mart.

Hundreds of rescuers, some crawling through the maze of rubble in search of survivors and corpses, worked through the night and into Thursday amid the cries of the trapped and the wails of workers' relatives gathered outside the building, which housed numerous garment factories and a handful of other companies.

"Save us brother. I beg you brother. I want to live," moaned Mohammad Altab, a garment worker pinned tightly between two concrete slabs and next to two corpses.

"It's so painful here ... I have two little children," Altab said, his voice weak from exhaustion.

After the cracks were reported Tuesday, managers of a local bank that also had an office in the building evacuated their workers. The garment factories, though, kept working, ignoring the instructions of the local industrial police, said Mostafizur Rahman, a director of that paramilitary police force.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association had also asked the factories to suspend work starting Wednesday morning, hours before the collapse.

"After we got the crack reports, we asked them to suspend work until further examination, but they did not pay heed," said Atiqul Islam, the group's president.

On Thursday morning, the odor of rotting bodies wafted through holes cut into the building. Junior minister for Home Affairs, Shamsul Haque, said that by late Thursday morning a total of 2,000 people had been rescued from the wreckage.

Brig. Gen. Mohammed Siddiqul Alam Shikder, who is overseeing army rescue teams, said the death toll had climbed to 175 as of Thursday afternoon.

Dozens of bodies, their faces covered, were laid outside a local school building so relatives could identify them. Thousands of workers' family members gathered outside the building, waiting for news, as thousands of garment workers from nearby factories took to the streets across the industrial zone in protest.

The garment manufacturers' group said the factories in the building employed 3,122 workers but it was not clear how many were in the building when it collapsed.

A clearer picture of the rescue operation is likely to be available by afternoon, officials said.

Searchers worked through the night to probe the jumbled mass of concrete with drills or their bare hands, passing water and flashlights to people pinned inside.

"I gave them whistles, water, torchlights. I heard them cry," said fire official Abul Khayer late Wednesday, as he prepared to work late into the night.

Abdur Rahim, an employee who worked on the fifth floor, said a factory manager gave assurances that the cracks in the building were no cause for concern, so employees went inside.

"After about an hour or so, the building collapsed suddenly," Rahim said. The next thing he remembered was regaining consciousness outside.

On a visit to the site, Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir told reporters the building had violated construction codes and that "the culprits would be punished."

Abdul Halim, an official with the engineering department in Savar, said the owner was originally allowed to construct a five-story building but he added another three stories illegally.

Local police chief Mohammed Asaduzzaman said police and the government's Capital Development Authority have filed separate cases of negligence against the building owner.

Habibur Rahman, police superintendent of the Dhaka district, identified the owner as Mohammed Sohel Rana, a local leader of ruling Awami League's youth front. Rahman said police were also looking for the owners of the garment factories.

Among the textile businesses in the building were Phantom Apparels Ltd., Phantom Tac Ltd., New Wave Style Ltd., New Wave Bottoms Ltd. and New Wave Brothers Ltd. According to their website, the New Wave companies make clothing for major brands including U.S. retailers The Children's Place and Dress Barn, Britain's Primark, Spain's Mango and Italy's Benetton. Benetton's communications department said in an email to The Associated Press that people involved in the collapse were not Benetton suppliers.

Jane Singer, a spokeswoman for The Children's Place, said that "while one of the garment factories located in the building complex has produced apparel for The Children's Place, none of our product was in production at the time of this accident."

Dress Barn said that to its knowledge, it had not purchased clothing from the factories involved since 2010. Primark, a major British clothing retailer, confirmed that one of the suppliers it uses to produce some of its goods was located on the second floor of the building.

In a statement emailed to The Associated Press, Primark said it was "shocked and deeply saddened by the appalling incident." It added that it has been working with other retailers to review the country's approach to factory standards and will now push for this review to include building integrity. Meanwhile, Primark's ethical trade team is working to collect information, assess which communities the workers come from and provide support "where possible."

Mango denied reports it was using any of the suppliers in the building. However, in an email statement to the AP, it said that there had been conversations with one of them to produce a batch of test products.

Kevin Gardner, a spokesman at Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., the second-largest clothing producer in Bangladesh, said the company is investigating to see if a factory in the building had been producing for the chain at the time of the collapse.

The collapse was even deadlier than the November factory fire that drew international attention to working conditions in Bangladesh's $20 billion-a-year textile industry. The country has about 4,000 garment factories and exports clothes to leading Western retailers, and the industry wields vast power in the South Asian nation.

The Tazreen factory in the fire lacked emergency exits, and its owner said only three floors of the eight-story building were legally built. Surviving employees said gates had been locked and managers had told them to go back to work after the fire alarm went off.
