Jessica Chastain may have won a Golden Globe Sunday for her role in "Zero Dark Thirty," but the honor comes with a new challenge -- fighting the temptation to show off her prize everywhere. "A friend of mine told me I should just walk around with it leading me, like walk into the theater for 'The Heiress' -- I'm doing a Broadway play right now -- with my Golden Globe," she told TODAY's Savannah Guthrie Friday.
She's come a long way since the days when some mysterious force seemed to?keep all of her movie roles hidden. "We used to joke there was something called the Chastain Curse, because when I finally started getting parts in films they would get delayed for some reason, like a studio would get sold," she said.
That might explain why in 2011 she had "7 movies" coming out to the public, including "Tree of Life" and "The Help."
Going unseen is no longer a problem, as her "Zero Dark Thirty" role as obsessed CIA agent Maya has ushered her into the ranks of award nominees. But Chastain also has another new film about to hit theaters. "Mama" is a horror thriller about a woman raising two nieces who had been left alone in the forest for five years.
For Chastain, choosing that kind of genre picture was a deliberate decision: "I realized immediately I was getting typecast as the perfect mother, the perfect devoted wife, and the stubborn person in me was like, 'You cannot put me in a box! You can't typecast me! I'm going to play a guitarist in a punk band who's selfish and doesn't like kids!'"
"Mama" opens in theaters Friday, Jan. 18.
