Thursday's college roundup: CNU names four to Athletic Hall of Fame

Former football standouts Rob Rodriguez and Roland Hilliard, basketball player Sherwin Green and track coach Louis Johnson were selected for the Christopher Newport University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Induction will take place at halftime of the 4 p.m. Greensboro-CNU men's basketball game Feb. 2.

Rodriguez was a first-team All-American selection by the American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com. He compiled 1,000 yards on 134 kickoff returns, blocked 10 kicks and intercepted a school-record nine passes.

Hilliard received first-team all-region honors and All-American honorable mention from D3football.com. The 2004 USA South Offensive Player of the Year is CNU's all-time leader in all-purpose yards by a significant margin, with 4,477.

Green led the Captains from 1972-75 and became the second Captain to earn all-conference honors twice.

Johnson began his association with the Captains in 1987 as a volunteer assistant track coach while still serving actively with the Newport News Police Department. In 2005-06, he served as interim head coach after the retirement of Vince Brown.

Women?s soccer:

Virginia senior forward Caroline Miller is one of three finalists for the Hermann Trophy, an award given to the best collegiate player.

Miller is the first U.Va. player to be named as a finalist. Division I coaches who are members of the NSCAA vote for the winner.

North Carolina?s Crystal Dunn and Penn State?s Christine Nairn are the other finalists for the award, which will be presented Friday night in St. Louis.

Women?s volleyball:

Wofford selected Ron Sweet, a James Madison assistant, to be the Terriers? head coach.
